<p>Original cloth and gilt sunned on spine with head band and foot a ltitle pulled and rubbed corners lightly knocked but otherwise minimal edge-wear. Closed page edges dust-toned with a touch of foxing that sometimes extends into outer page margins a few spots of foxing and one or two finger prints one untrimmed page roughly opened. Pigment of original dark green end-papers thinning in places producing lighter patches the dark pigment also bleeds through to edges along reverse of free end-papers. Small split in hinge paper. Name in on reverse of free front end-paper offset onto top margin of title page. Front hinge loosening after title page making mull visible but binding sound and firm for the rest of the volume. Imprint of <em>'A. & C. Black Edinburgh'</em> at foot of spine. A quite well-preserved copy of the relatively scarce first U.K. edition.</p> Thomas Constable and Co. / Adams, and Co. hardcover

First American edition and first edition with Agassiz's Memoir; 8vo pp. 5 ads 1 xlii 1 26-337 1 22 ads; engraved frontispiece portrait by Sartain from a Talbotype; nearly 60 figures in the text; original brown cloth gilt-stamped spine; slight cracking at the spine ends very good. With the ownership signature in pencil on the front free endpaper of Chester Averill 1836-1883 "State Geological Survey of Cal. San Fran 1862." Also with pencil annotations by Averil in a dozen or so places throughout the text often taking exception to Miller's observations. Hugh Miller was an uneducated quarry man who came to prominence by writing letters to his local editor in Scotland condemning the House of Lords for demanding changes made to the Church of Scotland. His skills as a writer were immediately recognized and he was encouraged to write and publish more articles. Since his first love was the quarry in which he worked he began writing articles on geology which were very well received and published in book form. His autobiography went through numerous editions and was seen as an example for the working class of how a uneducated man could succeed by hard work and trust in his opinions. Miller whose work was praised by such men as Agassiz Carlyle Hunt and Huxley committed suicide two days before Christmas in 1856. Gould and Lincoln unknown

Publisher's full brown cloth gilt lettering on spine blind-stamped borders and decoration on cover t.e.g. Illustrated with tissue-protected engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and 58 woodcuts in text. This is a later American printing based on the third London edition and includes a Memoir of the Author by Louis Agassiz. Hugh Miller 1802 1856 was a self-taught Scottish geologist and writer folklorist and an evangelical Christian. Considered to be one of Scotland's greatest paleontologists he made a number of important fossil discoveries though his fervent religious beliefs led him to strongly oppose the then-emerging theory of evolution. For most of 1856 Miller suffered severe headaches and mental distress and the most probable diagnosis is of psychotic depression. He feared that he might harm his wife or children because of persecutory delusions. Miller committed suicide shooting himself in the chest with a revolver in his house on Tower Street Portobello on the night of 23/24 December 1856. That night he had finished checking printers' proofs for his book on geology and Christianity "The Testimony of the Rocks." Before his death he wrote a poem called "Strange but True." He died on 24 December 1856. Former owner's elegant hand-writted signature and date 1874 on fep taped over a previous embossed bookplate.
