‎[MILLER, Hugh].‎

‎Poems Written in the Leisure Hours of a Journeyman Mason.‎

‎R. Carruthers. Inverness. 1829. . pp. vi 268. Contemporary half roan and marbled boards partially uncut a bit rubbed along corners and edges a very good copy. SCARCE - only 6 copies of this title recorded at major auctions since 1977. A manuscript note on the front end-paper records - 'Hugh Miller's first publication. 'Copies were bought up and destroyed by the author. Scarce.' John Whitefoord Mackenzie's cata: 1886.' I have not seen this statement in any of the biographical material on Miller. In his postscript TO THE READER in the above Miller writes - 'Like a true Utopian I value myself more on what I am yet to do than upon what I have already done. I believe myself possessed of a natural turn for poetry and by the publication of this volume I ask the wise and the literate if my opinion be just.'. Sadly received opinion did not support Miller in his. This book of poems mostly published in the Inverness Courier was not well regarded and backed up Miller's own later suspicion of his talents expressed towards the end of Letter - ' But it is possible that I have completely failed in poetry. It may appear that while grasping at originality of description and sentiment and striving to attain propriety of expression I have only been depicting common images and embodying obvious thoughts and this too in inelegant language. Possible have I said ! nay it is probable.' One critic was blunt - We are glad to understand that our author has the good sense to rely more on his chisel than the Muses.' GEORGE ROSIE Hugh Miller Outrage and Order. SEE also MACKENZIE Hugh Miller A Critical Study p.49 - 'The Poems. present a striking contrast to his prose. The two possess scarcely a feature in common. The poems have but rarely any imaginative interest and sink under a weight of moral judgement and religious profession. Cold print unsealed Miller's eyes to their defects. He published them in a fit of pique at editorial neglect - 'It would have been a greatly wiser act. had I put them in the fire instead.' ' R. Carruthers. Inverness. 1829. hardcover‎

‎Harlequin-Horace: or The Art of Modern Poetry‎

‎London: printed for Lawton Gilliver at Homer's Head against St. Dunstan's church in Fleetstreet 1731. Marbled Wrappers. Near Fine. Scarce First Edition written in 56 stanzas of rhyming verse of this satirical poem. Foxson's second state no known priority: correct catchword on p. 57 and p. 58 correctly numbered. Crown 8vo 189 x 122mm: 10591pp with folding engraved frontispiece and woodcut initials and ornaments. Later marbled wrappers paper label printed in red and black to front cover title page printed in red and black with bust vignette of Horace. A beautifully preserved copy tightly bound and clean throughout. Foxon M251. Miller was a playwright whose own works were performed at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and who adapted plays by Molière and other French dramatists for the London stage. He only revealed his authorship of this work in the fourth edition of 1735. Harlequin-Horace is a "witty inversion of the Ars poetica attacking pantomime and opera and exuberantly depicting a topsy-turvy theatrical world. Alexander Pope approved as did his disciples on the Grub-Street Journal . . . . The poem lampooned the Italian operas of Handel but Miller admired the sacred oratorios in English and himself furnished the libretto for Joseph and his Brethren." ODNB N. B. ‎MEMOIRS OF GENERAL MILLER‎

‎London: Longman Rees Orme Brown and Green. 1828. First edition. Two volumes. Signed and inscribed by General William 'Guillermo' Miller to the head of the title page of each volume: "Henry Stuart / from Genl. Miller / 1828". Octavo. Contemporary full diced calf the boards ruled in gilt the spines with five raised bands compartments ruled and decorated in gilt and with morocco title labels lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait four folding engraved maps one with hand-colouring and five folding engraved battle plans four with hand-colouring. pp. xxiii 1 389 1 vii 1 460. A very good copy the bindings firm with the second volume expertly re-backed with the original spine very neatly laid down a small chip to one of the spine labels of the second volume the first volume with a little wear to the joints and a touch of cracking at the front a little wear to the corners and a couple of minor knocks to the boards. The contents with a few spots of light foxing to the preliminary pages and offsetting to the plates are otherwise in very good order throughout. A rare inscribed first edition of this account of the life and exploits of the English-born revolutionary general William Miller 1795-1861 better known as Guillermo Miller a key figure in the Spanish American wars of independence.

Born in Kent Miller was fluent in several languages by the age of seventeen when he enrolled in the British army to fight in the Napoleonic Wars taking part in the Siege of Badajoz and Battle of Vittoria under the Duke of Wellington. In September 1817 hearing of the wars in Latin America he set sail for Buenos Aires to join San Martín's Army of the Andes. Here he took part in the liberation of Chile participating in the decisive battle of Maipú and subsequently joining Lord Cochrane as the commander of marines in the Chilean Navy. During this time he led a force of sixty soldiers during Cochrane's Capture of Valdivia later participating in the failed expedition to Chiloé and the small but significant Battle of Agüi.

After the liberation of Lima Miller was appointed commander of the Peruvian Legion playing a key role in the Battle of Torata. Peru's President José de la Riva Agüero subsequently promoted Miller to General of Brigade and upon the arrival of Simón Bolívar he was made Chief of a cavalry unit composed of Argentines Chileans Peruvians and Colombians. At the Battle of Junín Miller's unit was largely responsible for the Spanish defeat and at the pivotal Battle of Ayacucho - which secured Peru's independence - his initiative in launching an attack at a critical moment without waiting for General Sucre's orders was decisive in securing victory. This unit who became known as the "Hussars of Junín" have ever since served as the guard of the Peruvian Palace of Government in Lima.

Following Peru's independence Miller also settled in Lima. In 1834 in appreciation of his services to the nation and government he received promotion to the rank of Grand Marshal the highest military grade in Peru subsequently holding various public offices. He later served as the British diplomatic Consul to the Kingdom of Hawaii finally returning again to Peru where he died. During the wars Miller was wounded twenty two times his autopsy revealing that he had carried two bullets in his liver for forty years.

The present work based upon General Miller's notes and letters was compiled by his brother John who also adds a historical introduction glossary and indexes providing a detailed account of Miller's time in South America. The work was reissued the following year both in English and in Spanish translation. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green. hardcover‎

‎Situation Normal. Signed With 7-Page Typescript‎

‎New York: Reynal and Hitchcock 1944. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo 21.25cm; yellow cloth with titles stamped in black and red on spine and front cover; dustjacket; x1793pp. Signed by Miller in blue ball-point pen on the title page. Spine ends gently nudged some trivial wear to lower board edges with a hint of sunning to upper board edges and a faint shallow stain to lower edge of rear cover; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped priced $2.00 with two tiny tears at crown and a faint vertical crease along left joint; a bright very Near Fine example. Laid into this copy is an untitled seven-page carbon typescript on onionskin 8" x 10.5" written by Miller in 1943 relating details about the book's conception; horizontal fold at center staple holes at upper left corner with two neat punctures along left margin; Very Good. Attractive copy of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright's first book based on his experiences researching the war correspondence of journalist Ernie Pyle. The title derives from the widely-used military acronym slang "SNAFU" Situation Normal: All Fucked Up which translates to a bad situation that is a normal state of affairs. Miller was tasked by Hollywood to gather material for "an honest movie" about American GI's during the war about their training daily life their hopes dreams and why they are fighting. Miller visited several Army camps training living and interviewing soldiers and taking down the unvarnished truth of his discoveries. "I was the person fate picked out of Brooklyn to go among the soldiers and pick up enough facts honest-to-God true facts to make a soldier picture which soldiers could sit through until the end without once laughing in derision. A picture that would properly end all soldier pictures" p.1. The film in question was William A. Wellman's The Story of G.I. Joe to be adapted by Miller for Lester Cowan from Pyle's 1943 book This Is Your War. Miller's version was ultimatley not produced likely due to ideological differences and his leftist political leanings. The typescript written the year before Situation Normal was published summarizes the conception of the book detailing his early meetings with Ernie Pyle over how his work would be translated into film and what they wanted to accomplish. "I bring up the idea that it would be a shame to show this massive canvas without reducing what is chaos to at least an inkling of purpose and order and of course he agrees. But we both feel that to lard on ideology where there is no ideology would be to wrap the truth. You can't have soldiers talking about four freedoms when all they want is to go home. Myself I curse the press and the million textbooks that turn out the billions of words and never add up to an excuse for dying" typescript p.5. A superlative copy of an important debut. Reynal and Hitchcock unknown‎
