Oxford: Phaidon Press 1984. First edition 1984. Hardback. xviii 361pp. Dust jacket. Quinten Massys 1466 - 1530 was one of the most important painters of the Netherlandish school. Although best known for his great altarpieces of 1507 - 11 Massys is most innovative in his treatment of secular subjects both within his religious paintings and in profane works. true to the conservative dictates of late medieval piety in emphasizing the fallen nature of man. Massys gave a satirical interpretation to secular figures equating ugliness and grotesqueness with sin. The painter's sacred images in contrast to the secular show a parallel insistence on equating holiness with beauty. Initially derived from popular fifteenth-century Flemish prototypes and later reflecting Italian influence the sacred images are examined both in terms of contemporary piety and as visual expressions of religious purpose.Late in the artist's career they tended to be contrasted with the secular and increasingly expressed a remarkable other-worldly beauty. Focusing particularly on the distinctive contrasts and mingling of styles so characteristic of Massys' work the author shows the place of this master in the emergence of new forms and currents in art. Loosely inserted is a review of this book published in Apollo Magazine April 1986 by the art historian the late John Rowlands whose copy this was. Book in very good condition. Wellesley Massachusetts: Davis Museum and Cultural Center Wellesley College 2008. Hardcover. VG. Duotone illustrated boards with black cloth spine and gilt lettering. 176 pp. with 2 gatefolds; 47 duotone cataloge items pictured. Issued in conjunction with a series of 2008-2009 exhibitions. "The central goal of this exhibition is to display a selection of impressive and rare examples of this important yet unfamiliar category of prints that blossomed across Europe in the sixteenth century. It will introduce the composite print phenomenon in order to reassess and situate it within the history of Renaissance visual culture while also hoping to stimulate further study. For the first time since the ground-breaking exhibition Riesenholzschnitte Giant Woodcuts held in Germany in 1976 this exhibition assembles nearly fifty of these multipart works in one place. It however also expands the body of material from that earlier exhibition to include both engravings and etchings in addition to woodcuts." p. 8 With essays by Larry Silver Suzanne Boorsch Lilian Armstrong Alison Stewart and Stephen Goddard a substantial bibliography and the exhibition checklist of 47 items. Beautiful and detailed reproductions of the prints. Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College hardcover books
