Si la Bourgogne n'a rien à envier aux autres régions de France pour ses richesses artistiques et patrimoniales, ce n'est pas, de prime abord, à l'orfèvrerie que l'on songe en les évoquant. Elle connut pourtant une époque prestigieuse en ce domaine, celle des ducs de la maison de Valois (XIVe-XVe siècles), dont seules de très rares ?uvres subsistent encore. A partir du XVIe siècle, les orfèvres bourguignons bénéficient des commandes des nombreuses et florissantes communautés religieuses et hospitalières, des autorités municipales pour les entrées royales et princières, et des membres de la bourgeoisie aisée et de la noblesse parlementaire. Ce pays de vignoble a suscité la production originale et abondante de tasses à vin et de coupes à deux anses, dites coupes de manage, dont la postérité, aux XIXe et XXe siècles, atteste la permanence d'une tradition alors concurrencée par les centres parisien et lyonnais. Offrir l'état des connaissances actuelles sur les orfèvres et les fabricants marchands ayant exercé leur art dans les vingt-trois villes ou communautés relevant de la Monnaie de Dijon du XIVe au XXe siècle, mais aussi sur leurs ?uvres et leurs poinçons, tel est l'objet du présent ouvrage. A l'issue de longues et minutieuses recherches documentaires et études de pièces d'orfèvrerie conservées dans des collections publiques et privées, ce ne sont pas moins de 1270 orfèvres (maîtres, compagnons ou apprentis) antérieurs à la Révolution et 510 de leurs ?uvres, ainsi que 310 fabricants marchands des XIXe et XXe siècles qui ont été recensés. Cette riche matière est ici présentée à travers un dictionnaire, un répertoire, des tableaux, des poinçons et un catalogue d'une sélection de 327 pièces.
