Welke munten werden er geslagen in de Antwerpse Munt en hoe werd zilver ook in textiel gebruikt? Waar was het ambachtshuis van de Antwerpse edelsmeden, hoe was het ingericht en wat rest er nog van? Welk zilverwerk hadden de Antwerpse burgers en welke schilders en beeldhouwers werkten samen met de Antwerpse edelsmeden? Waarom had de medische vakliteratuur zoveel aandacht voor de zilveren kaakprothese die Jan Pieter Antoon Verschuylen voor een Franse kanonnier maakte, die in 1832 in Antwerpen bij een bomexplosie verminkt werd? Dat er na de onafhankelijkheid van Belgie weer een grens was tussen beide landen vormde voor deze edelsmid, die heel wat kerkzilver naar Nederland exporteerde, geen probleem. Aan een klant die bij hem een gouden monstrans voor Amsterdam bestelde schreef hij: ?Mijn advies is altoos voor de minste koste van ze te laeten smockelen?.

Ce hanap en forme de chouette le plus ancien modèle anversois réalisé à partir d'une noix de coco que nous connaissons surprend par la maîtrise technique dont il témoigne. Il constituait sans doute une des pièces maîtresses d?une collection d?art ou d?un cabinet de curiosités. Ce chef-d??uvre, issu du siècle d?or, nous en dit long sur la vie à cette époque. Il témoigne de la richesse d?autrefois, de l?essor du port d?Anvers, de l?importation de produits exotiques et de l?artisanat de qualité en matière d?argenterie. On peut désormais admirer ce splendide objet d?art au DIVA à Anvers. Un maître anversois À côté du poinçon de l?orfèvre ? un pélican ? et le millésime 1548-1549, nous retrouvons sur l?objet la petite main si familière. Celle-ci rappelle la légende de Brabo qui trancha la main du géant Antigone et la jeta dans l?Escaut. Bien que nous ignorions le nom de l?artiste, nous savons ainsi avec certitude que ce hanap en forme de chouette provient d?Anvers. L?inscription ?Als alle fogels sin thoe neste, so is min flige beste? (Si tous les oiseaux dorment dans leur nid, je serai le meilleur en vol) réfère à d?anciens recueils de chants allemands et néerlandais. Le chant évoque l?amour que la chouette vouait au rossignol. Coupe à boire ou objet décoratif À la Renaissance, les hanaps en forme d?animaux réalisés dans les anciens Pays-Bas et dans les territoires germaniques étaient des objets tant fonctionnels que décoratifs. Ils étaient collectés par des amateurs d?objets exotiques et étaient étalés avec grande fierté sur des buffets ou dans des cabinets de curiosités ; ils étaient en outre utilisés dans certaines circonstances. La tête en argent de la chouette pouvait être dévissée et le liquide était versé dans le corps de l?oiseau. Il n?est cependant pas certain que l?on ait réellement bu dans la coupe anversoise. Une autre piste nous encourage à chercher l?origine de la chouette d?Anvers dans le système corporatif de la ville. Quelques références évoquent vers 1561 une chouette au sein de la guilde des carabiniers anversoise. Il se pourrait que les membres de cette guilde utilisaient de telles coupes à certaines occasions.

De Franse Revolutie (1789) leidde niet enkel tot het verdwijnen van de adellijke titels maar ze betekende ook het einde van de grote traditie van de Franse juweelkunst. De externe tekenen van rijkdom symboliseerden de monarchie, het hof en de aristocratische status en maakten op geen enkele manier deel uit van de revolutionaire idealen. Enkel al het bezitten van juwelen kon iemand naar de guillotine brengen. Onder het Directoire bleef soberheid de regel. Er ontstond een mode van militaire decoraties, ringen, broches en ijzeren armbanden, versierd met patriottische slogans en portretten van de helden van de revolutie. Onder het bewind van Napoleon (1799-1814) bloeide de sierkunst weer op en juwelen werden opnieuw aan het hof geintroduceerd. Napoleon had een zwak voor juwelen. Grote juweelhuizen zoals Nitot beleefden toen hun glorietijd. Juwelen en kleding hadden verschillende doelstellingen. Het waren politieke en diplomatieke instrumenten om vriend en vijand aan het keizerrijk te hechten, maar ze deden ook dienst als propaganda voor de grandeur van het keizerrijk en symboliseerden de macht van de keizer. De Franse Revolutie (1789) leidde niet enkel tot het verdwijnen van de adellijke titels maar ze betekende ook het einde van de grote traditie van de Franse juweelkunst. De externe tekenen van rijkdom symboliseerden de monarchie, het hof en de aristocratische status en maakten op geen enkele manier deel uit van de revolutionaire idealen. Enkel al het bezitten van juwelen kon iemand naar de guillotine brengen. Onder het Directoire bleef soberheid de regel. Er ontstond een mode van militaire decoraties, ringen, broches en ijzeren armbanden, versierd met patriottische slogans en portretten van de helden van de revolutie. Onder het bewind van Napoleon (1799-1814) bloeide de sierkunst weer op en juwelen werden opnieuw aan het hof geintroduceerd. Napoleon had een zwak voor juwelen. Grote juweelhuizen zoals Nitot beleefden toen hun glorietijd. Juwelen en kleding hadden verschillende doelstellingen. Het waren politieke en diplomatieke instrumenten om vriend en vijand aan het keizerrijk te hechten, maar ze deden ook dienst als propaganda voor de grandeur van het keizerrijk en symboliseerden de macht van de keizer.
