A letter offering to distribute up to 300 of the circulars. William Boyd Carpenter 1841-1918 was a Church of England cleric who became Bishop of Ripon and Royal Chaplain to Queen Victoria. Levi Leone 1821-1888. English jurist and statistician. His chief work History of British Commerce and of the Economic Progress of the British Nation 1763-1870 is considered to be a partisan account of British economic development. Size is 150mm x 100mm. He begins by apologising for being unable to give any information regarding Shettle who 'only came into Ripon Diocese in 1911 theh year in which I resigned'. He is unacquainted with Shettle's books none of which are credited to him in Crockford's. He agrees with Lang's 'letter & notes on Church & Education matters': 'the War is constantly disclosing how far astray our Education & Church method has been. No high spiritual ideals have been fully & widely recognised in our schools & our churches have been used too often as nurseries of narrow & pedantic theology or as political hotbeds'. William Robert Lang the probable recipient was born in Scotland and educated at the University of Glasgow. He became Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toronto and took an active part in the First World War. He was a member of the Canadian General Staff and commanded the University of Toronto contingent of the Canadian Officers Training Corps. On letterhead of The Palace Ripon. 13 October 1886. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. Aged and grubby. Written with purple pencil. He begins by thanking her for the 'letter & two Photographs' and is 'looking forward some day to see my god child whom the photographs picture as very bonny'. He is 'obliged to write on the train & to use this ugly pencil' and thinks there is little chance of his 'seeing you or anyone else' as he has 'incessant work & numberless engagements till the middle of Novr.' After that he hopes 'to go somewhere and get a bit of quiet as the long journeys & constant preachings & talkings are most unsettling and I almost think demoralizing – I have travelled more than 900 miles since the beginning of this month & I have given 10 Sermons & Speeches – The bliss of silence & stillness I hope to attain next month somewhere'. Cover is a nice stiff material with just a few small areas of light rubbing and a very soft crease up about a third of the way from the bottom of the back cover. No spine creases. Includes like-new map inserted in a pocket at the back of the book. Illustrated throughout. A very nice copy of this hard-to-find book on the history of Rescue California. A very scarce first edition of William Carpenter's pamphlet discussing the 1832 Reform Bill here criticising the people who were trying to put the working classes against the bill. A very scarce work. The first edition of this work. This work is an argument in favour of the Reform Bill of 1832 which introduced changes to the electoral systems in England and Wales. In this work the author criticises the people who were attempting to set the working classes against it. Written by William Carpenter a theological and political writer. He was imprisoned in 1831 for evading the stamp duty on newspapers. This pamphlet was written whilst he was in the King's Bench prison. Disbound. First and last leaf are almost detached. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Fair Strange unknown

Contains ex-libris 'curse bookplate' of C J Peacock to front pastedown. Includes 4 engraved plates including frontis. Plate depicting the Louvre supposed to be opposite p53 is missing. Pages are mildly tanned with heavy foxing. Mild cracking to gutters however binding remains firm. Heavy thumb-marking present. Notable water stain to front endpaper. Notable creasing to p.229-32. Droplet to p.65. Boards have notable edgewear with corner crushing and peeling and heavy marking to boards. Mild sunning to spine which has mild crushing to ends. Visible peeling to leather.
