A Near Fine copy.</p> <p>First edition of Marie Elizabeth Carpenter’s dissertation a systematic study of how African Americans were represented in U.S. history textbooks from 1826 to 1939. Carpenter documented the systemic erasure of Black agency and contributions in educational publishing. She examined the treatment of such central topics as slavery Reconstruction and the struggle for civil rights across more than a century of educational publishing exposing patterns of distortion omission and ideological bias. Carpenter also found that textbooks cast Black Americans as passive figures ignoring their roles in emancipation military service and cultural life. She urged use of broader sources and full integration of Black contributions into the historical narrative.</p> <p>A methodical and early contribution to the historiography of African American education likely informed by the concerns raised in Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s The Mis‑Education of the Negro 1933. This edition precedes the Menasha Wisconsin printing issued the same year by George Banta Publishing Company.</p> unknown

C. mid-1860's Considered by many of his contemporaries as 'first among equals' A slip of paper bearing the inked inscription of the sitter has been pasted across the lower margin of the mount. Mary Carpenter was an English educational and social reformer who founded the ragged schools and reformatories bringing previously unavailable educational opportunities to poor children and young offenders. Walking through a Bristol slum in the 1830s and witnessing the poverty of its children she realized young offenders could never improve their circumstances without their well being fostered. Her life's work from that day became creating stable nurturing institutions for social reform. Carpenter was also active in the anti-slavery movement and became known as one of the foremost public speakers of her time traveling to India where she worked to improve female education establish reformatory schools and improve prison conditions. unknown

She opened "ragged schools" to give an education to the children of the poor and introduced reformatories which took a caring and constructive stance for young offenders. "The will of each individual girl must be enlisted in her own reformation and she should be led to feel that without this the efforts of teachers will be useless. Such confidence must be awakened in the minds of the children toward their teachers." Mary Carpenter also campaigned for better education for women and reforms to prisons. Following a meeting with Frederick Douglass Mary Carpenter became fervently opposed of the slave trade particularly the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. She traveled extensively in America Europe and India where she also sought reforms similar to those she pursued in Britain.
