First edition of this very scarce dealer’s catalogue for biscuit cracker cake cookie and donut making machinery produced by the noted American inventor whose company supplied commercial ovens and machinery worldwide. He has included the plans and illustrations for his Mechanical Continuous baking Reel Oven in which items are loaded on an internal ferris wheel and rotate to bake to the proper doneness; the Double Roller Combined Rout Press for producing fig bars hard & soft dough biscuit gauging stamping panning and peeling; Biscuit cutting and panning machines; Sponge Biscuit Gauging machines; Soft Dough cake machines for producing bear claws pastries donuts and custard-stuffed pastries; Sugar Wafer Machines icing machines mixers biscuit cutters and much more. Harton 1853-1915 was a machinist and inventor who specialized in ovens and building machinery for commercial baking operations including biscuits cookies cakes and crackers. In addition he held patents for making all-tobacco cigarettes an oven shelf several cake and bicuit machines and even a cake icing machine. With 8 tipped-in silver gelatin photographs sized 5.25 x 7.5 in. 1 w/ minor scuffing from offsetting of removed guard sheet. Thick brown softcovers punch sewn at gutter margin w/ brown silk braid yapp edges embossed logo on front cover minor edgewear rubbing minor soiling to title still a VG- exemplar. First edition of this very scarce photographic souvenir of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society Exhibition held in Glasgow for their grocery departments. The noted Co-op recreated several different exhibits in order to display sell and advertise their toffees candies tomato ketchups pickles marmalades and the workers who manned the booths. At the time the S.W.C.S. was supplying over 690000 families through 268 affiliated retail Co-op societies achieving £17.7 million in sales. The photographs show artfully created counter displays wonderful period product advertisements and all manned primarily by young rosy cheeked Scottish lasses and nearly all in uniforms. Of special interest is the large lighthouse display stretching nearly 20 feet above the exhibition floor and composed entirely of marmalade and jam jars. The S.C.W.S. was formed originally in 1868 for purchasing manufacturing goods and eventually set up an entire factory complex at Shieldhall Glasgow producing a wide range of foodstuffs furniture clothing and housewares for their affiliated Co-ops. The Chinese sugar-cane; its history mode of culture manufacture of the sugar etc. With reports of its success in different portions of the United States. . . .

Original printed softcovers minor chipping head & foot of spine slight chipping couple lower corners dustsoiling still a VG bright copy. First edition of one of the earliest American studies on Chinese Sugarcane Sorghum and the possibilities that this was the sorghum plant that American farmers hoped would grow in the Northern United States and definitive work on growing harvesting and distilling sorghum. A variety of “Chinese Sugarcane†was imported by Father Du Halde from Sichuan China in 1851 where it was quickly adopted also under the name of “Northern Chinese or Shanghai Sugarcane†as a crop to provide sugars for alcoholic products filling the void left by the grape crop failure in the 1850s. Chinese Sugarcane seeds were first brought into United States by Jay Browne Esq. in 1854 and a few intrepid American nurseries began planting and determining if it could be planted and harvested profitably in the North. Hyde writes that in his test crop he was able to secure a dark sugar from the cane molasses and notes that it will be of tremendous value in producing alcohol and confectionaries and that the Sorghum remnants could be fed to livestock. Hyde 1825-1898 worked with his father James Hyde in developing the very successful nursery emphasizing fruit trees ornamental trees and cash crops. He was a pioneering environmentalist who founded the first improvement society in the United States the Newton Centre Tree Club whose purpose was to emphasize beautifying the roads and commons in Massachusetts. He was Newton MA first mayor after the city was incorporated in 1873 and was also successful in persuading the Boston & Albany RR to acquire the existing single-track line of the Charles River Railroad to aid his nursery business. Original editions of this work have become quite scarce in the trade. Yellow colour-tinted printed softcovers woodcut engraving cover art of industrial swing churn on front cover Eureka Butter Worker on back cover 1 leaf w/ small tear at upper margin affecting only a couple letters still an excellent bright copy. First edition of this scarce and fascinating dairy machinery catalogue which included butter presses different sizes and varieties of swing churns which enabled dairies to produce quality butter in larger quantities as well as insulated butter boxes for storing and carrying the produced butter. Of particular interest is the treadmill attachment which could be used with dog sheep or goat although one suspects small children often running it in order to more efficiently churn butter. The company was founded in 1868 as the Hartford Sorghum Machine Co. but by 1873 was incorporated as the Vermont Machine Company and within a few years became one of the largest dairy equipment manufacturers in New England. Recent cloth post-binder screw posts at gutter margin stamping on front cover VG exemplar. This remarkable Depression-era promotional photo catalogue for the famed Seattle spice & coffee company Crescent Manufacturing Company which began in 1883 as the Larsen Extract Company founded by Albert C. Larsen best known at the time for their Vanilla extract. Wilmer James Kahle 1862-1943 and his brother John Wesley Kahle 1858-1918 purchased Crescent a few months before the Klondike Gold Rush and quickly began supplying the throngs of miners with a spice-and-preservation packet. The company is perhaps best remembered for their famed imitation maple flavoring dubbed Mapleine and quickly won the company a worldwide market. As shown in this album Crescent actually continued to grow and expand during the Great Depression as their products were indispensable for cash-strapped housewives bakeries restaurants and soda fountains especially with their substitute for maple syrup. By implementing across-the-board pay cuts Crescent remained viable and retained a loyal work force. To aid sales the company produced a number of Mapleine promotional cookbooks such as the one preserved in this catalogue entitled Mapleine Dainties perfect for ice creams pinoche puddings parfaits custards cakes and more. The album opens with images of the Crescent plant coffee roasting equipment offices private cafeteria employee lounge area followed by photos of the stockroom women working in the Extract Department and more. The innovative company created and marketed imitation spices during World War II to replace the Southeast Asian sources disrupted by the War and continued to evolve and expand as a company until it was sold to McCormick & Co. in 1989. These photo catalogues were designed to be expanded and reduced as needed to advertise the Crescent Company and its’ Products often with different images. First 3 vols. -- Oblong 8vo. 18; 11; 9 silver gelatin photos sized 5.25 x 7 in. all w/ typed info specification and/or printed specifications and model numbers on verso 3rd vol. with additional 2 printed leaves in red white & blue. Printed softcovers red & blue lettering & Company logo on front cover bound at upper fore-edge w/ steel adjustable accufasteners minor edgewear & soiling to 1st vol. chipping to rear cover vol. 2 w/ embossed ownership stamp in fore-edge of each image still VG set; Fol. 4 - 4to. 34 leaves printed in red white & blue 32 w/ illustrations of refrigerated display cases colour-printed softcovers comb-bound as issued NF copy. First editions of these remarkably scarce salesman sample photographic catalogues for refrigerated display cases and dairy display cases. The earliest examples range in size from 126 quart capacity up to 360 quarts with most of them featuring sliding glass tops and the larger ones with multiple sliding tops as well as hoods. In addition the company sold refrigerated cases for restaurants soda fountains and diners which would hold 40 gallons sealed exterior units and a locked case version. The second and third catalogues feature self-service units featuring lighted advertising hoods and steel bodies. In the 1960s National moved away from real photo catalogues towards those with printed illustrations. The fourth catalogue features lighted refrigerated diary & beverage wall display cases with some intended for commercial units and remote installation featuring solid stainless steel bodies and stainless glass fronted doors along with refrigerated milk cases used in cafeterias across the country. They could be ordered with white enamel stainless steel or formica tops and/or cases. National Milk Box Refrigeration Co. began operating at 171-173 Bayard Street in Brooklyn in 1953 manufacturing and selling just the milk cases but by the end of the 1950s was moving into refrigerated trucks and later trucking. The Company continued to actively operate until recently. No copies located in Worldcat. With colour lithograph-illustrated title two original silver gelatin photographs tipped-in three colour lithograph plates colour map numerous diagrams and printed photo text illustrations and couple leaves with the Downyflake Doughnut sign as border. Original simulated limp black calf 3-ring binder black silk moire pastedowns occasional thumbing minor dustsoiling and edgewear to some corners still a NF copy. First edition of this very scarce promotional dealer’s catalogue for Downyflake Doughnut Shop franchises fitted out with Levitt’s famed Downyflake Doughnut machine depicted in the original photographs tipped-in as well as the doughnuts themselves. Although American style doughnuts were popular bakery items in certain areas of the United States before World War I they became a hit with the American Expeditionary Force soldiers who were homesick and had them served up to them by women Salvation Army volunteers and some were even taken to the front lines. Levitt introduced the first doughnut machine in 1920 after he had begun selling doughnuts in his bakeries during the War and hungry theatre crowds encouraged him to produce a gadget that would churn out the Downyflake Doughnuts faster and he did. The Doughnut Machine Corporation of America caught fire and in 1931 opened the first of their Mayflower Coffee Shops which sold doughnuts along with hamburgers corned beef hash and waffles. In the same year Levitt chose to develop the first franchise businesses in the United States wherein the Downyflake Doughnut shops purchased their patented Levitt Downyflake Doughnut Machine the Downyflake Doughnut mix and were guaranteed proprietary income territories. This amazing dealer’s merchandising catalogue details the endorsements by Good Housekeeping the tremendous profit potential for small businesses the supplied equipment and accessories the correct way to set up advertising window displays and how the machines themselves offered a tremendous draw to customers. In addition the Doughnut Corporation of America had just opened a plant in Fort Worth TX in 1932 to supply dried egg powder which previously had for decades been imported from China. The catalogue illustrates the advertising banners for windows folding counter displays advertising signs and brochures to hand out with every Downyflake Box of doughnuts. The franchises spread across America and would eventually achieve a total of about 400 stores with the majority in the New England area. In fact there is one sole remaining franchise in Nantucket MA operated by Ron Oldham and Patty Kennedy and still features the Downyflake Doughnut sign on the exterior of the restaurant. Levitt 1884-1953 was born in Ottoman-controlled Bulgaria and emigrated to the United States in 1890 where he settled in Milwaukee and managed a Kroger’s Department Store Chain. Labels measure from approximately 1 1/2" square up to about 9" x 6." Front cover of scrapbook perished. Some mild wear to labels. Overall contents well preserved. Excepting missing cover and inherent condition issues in vernacular scrapbook assembly about very good overall. <br/><br/>A scrapbook album holding more than 200 circa-1980's graphic labels used in soda vending machines. Brand representation appears to cover primarily Coca-Cola products of the era with a page of price labels ranging from 10-cents to 50-cents. Acquired by us from a dealer in general vintage who attributed provence to the estate of a former vending machine operator. An engaging and ephemeral assembly of vintage soda-sales graphics. unknown
