‎"(ARAGO, DOMINIQUE- FRANCOIS). - THE DISCOVERY OF MAGNETIZATION BY WAY OF THE VOLTAIC CURRENT.‎

‎Expériences relatives à l'aimantation du fer et de l'acier par l'action du courant voltaïque.‎

‎(Paris, Crochard, 1820). No wrappers as extracted fron 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', Volume 15 (2e Series). Pp. 93-102.‎

‎First appearance of this importent paper in which Arago gives an account of his discovery of how iron and steel could be magnetized by the action of the voltaic current, THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. ""Arago .... made several important contributions to electromagnetism on his own. On 20 September 1820 he announced the discovery of the temporary magnetization of soft iron by an electric current, which suggested to Ampère a theory about the nature of magnetic ""currents"" and provided the technological key to the electric telegraph. Ampère calculated that the magnetic power could be multiplied by twisting the current-carrying wire into a helix, and with Arago he carried out the first experiments on primitive solenoids. In his historical articles Arago was always careful to credit Ampère with the major share of this discovery, which ultimately depended upon Ampère’s mathematical theory.""(DSB).Arago formed a close freinship with Fresnel, whose views on the nature of light he ardently supported. He assisted Fresnel in some of his most importent work and made original discoveries in the same field.Magie ""A Source Book in Physics"", p. 443 ff.‎

‎"(DANIEL, GABRIEL). - AN IMAGINARY TRAVEL IN THE CARTESIAN WORLD.‎

‎Iter per Mundum Cartesii (and) Novae Difficultates a Peripatetico Propositae Auctori Iteneris per Mundum Cartesii Circa cognitionem Brutorum. Cum Refutatione duplicis defensionis Systematis Mundi Cartesii. (2 vols).‎

‎Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1694. Uncut in contemp. blank boards. Title handwritten on spine. Spine a little rubbed. (22),307 pp. and (8),159 pp. Textillustrations in woodcut illustrating Cartesian physics and world system. A large copy, few marginal brownspots. Previous owners name on fly-leaf, Vilhelm Maar, Danish historian of medicine.‎

‎First Latin edition (The French original from 1690 Voyage du Monde de Descartes) of this imaginary travel to find Descartes on the moon and in the upper spheres. The work is one of the most importent anti-Cartesian polemics of the 1690's and it attacs the whole of Descartes system in a satirical way.""It aimes principally at the sharp Cartesian distinction between body and soul, related in a satirical fashion the voyage of the disembodied souls of the narrator, of Mersanne, and of another old friend of Descartes in the upper spheres. On their way to visit Descartes in the third heaven, they meet the souls of Aristotle and the disciples of descartes (clearly refelcting here the philosophical opinions of Gabriel Daniel himself). One of the articles of that treaty stipulates that the Cartesians will refer to Aristotle with more respect, whereas the Aristotelians will refrain from calling Descartes ""Enthusiast"", ""Madman"", ""Heretick"" or ""Atheist"" - all of these evidently labels commonly used by the opponents of Descartes at that time."" (Michael Heyd in ""Be Sober and Reasonable""). The work was published anonymous and earlier sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe. -‎

‎First edition of Tschirnhaus' ""Tschirnhaus Tranformation"".Tschirnhaus work intensively on finding a general method for solving equations of higher of higher degree. ""His transformations constituted the most promising contribution to the solution of equations during the seventeenth century"" but his elimination of the second and third coefficients by means of such transformation was far from adequate for the solution of the quintic.(Boyer. A History of Mathematics, 1968, 472 p.).Tschirnhaus (1651-1708) , a Saxon nobleman, had as wide interest as acquaintances: He studied in Leyden, served in the Dutch army, visited England and Paris several times. He set up a glassworks in Italy and is said to have introduced Porcelain to Europe. He wrote about philosophy and mathematics and was a close friend of Leibniz.""In mathematics, a Tschirnhaus transformation, also known as Tschirnhausen transformation, is a type of mapping on polynomials developed by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus in 1683. It may be defined conveniently by means of field theory, as the transformation on minimal polynomials implied by a different choice of primitive element. This is the most general transformation of an irreducible polynomial that takes a root to some rational function applied to that root.""(Wikipedia).Parkinson ""Breakthroughs 1683 M.‎

‎First appearance of Tschirnhaus's two papers in which he used infinitisimal methods which were very close to Leibniz's method and where he tried to lay down criteria for rational quadratures in the case of conic, cubic and quadratic curves, papers that led Leibniz to publish his first paper on the differential calculus, the ""Nova Methoda"" in the Acta for 1684 in order to secure his priority over Tschirnhaus concerning the calculus. Leibniz discovered, when he read Tschirnhaus' papers, that Tschirnhaus had here published results showing similarity with Leibniz's invention of the calculus as he had confided to Tschirnhaus earlier, during their Parisian stay, and this without references to Leibniz. The second issue contains an original paper by LEIBNIZ: ""Meditatio Juridico-Mathematica de Interusurio simplice"". ‎Original printing of The Economist - the most important and influential economic journal worldwide - from the year 1939 where Hitler invaded Poland and thereby initiated The Second World War.On September 2, 1939, the editor of the Economist wrote: ""Since it is in Poland the the line has been drawn, it is in Poland that we must take our immovable stand. German aggression and robbery, whether by force or by the threat of force must stop here and now and stop forever. For the British people, with a quite and unflurried resolution as strong as anything in their history, have determined that it is better to fight a war than to yield an inch on a principe that has become one of national honour and national safety"". In the following issue, published September 9, it has come to open war between Poland and Germany and the editor states: ""For the first time in his career, we may feel grateful to Hitler. Since a war was quite inevitable (and knowing what we now do of his state of mind, we can clearly see that it was), we could hardly have hoped for a straighter moral issue on which to fight it."". Here is offered a most interesting contemporary account from a British perspective on the beginning of The Second World.‎

‎Original printing of The Economist - the most important and influential economic journal worldwide - from the year 1879. The initial planning of the Panama Canal began in 1879. The enormous endeavor of digging the Canal was reflected in The Economist: ""The canal proposed by M. de Lesseps, and intended to pierce the Isthmus of Panama is in many respects a bolder enterprise even than the Suez Canal. The engineering difficulties are far greater, the climate is a much more serious obstacle to labour, and especially to that of Europeans, and, finally, the possibility of a rival plan being carried out is much greater.""‎

‎(London, Taylor and Francis, 1856). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from ""Philosophical Transactions"" 1856 - Vol. 146 - Part I. Pp. 297-342 a. pp. 343-355. Clean and fine.‎

‎First printing of the paper in which Airy describes his remarkable experiments aiming at finding the density of the earth. His approach to the problem was to determine the differences of gravity at the top as well at the bottom of a suitable deep mine.""One of the most remarkable of Airy's researches was his determination of the mean density of the Earth. In 1826, the idea occurred to him of attacking this problem by means of pendulum experiments at the top and bottom of a deep mine. His first attempt, made in the same year, at the Dolcoath mine in Cornwall, failed in consequence of an accident to one of the pendulums. A second attempt in 1828 was defeated by a flooding of the mine, and many years elapsed before another opportunity presented itself. The experiments eventually took place at the Harton pit near South Shields in 1854. Their immediate result was to show that gravity at the bottom of the mine exceeded that at the top by 1/19286 of its amount, the depth being 383 m (1,256 ft) From this he was led to the final value of Earth's specific density of 6.566.[This value, although considerably in excess of that previously found by different methods, was held by Airy, from the care and completeness with which the observations were carried out and discussed, to be ""entitled to compete with the others on, at least, equal terms."" (The currently accepted value for Earth's density is 5.5153 g/cm.). (Wikipedia).‎

‎First appearance of Ampere's notable memoir (issued in 4 parts) in which he tries to set up a classification system for the elementary entities in chemistry tieing the elements together in a natural classification, a dim foreshadowing of the periodic table.""Here (in the paper offered) he drew attention to the similarities between Lavoisier's and his fellowers classification of elements in terms of their reactions with oxygen and Linnaeus' classification of plants in terms of their sexual organs. Bernard de Jussieu had successfully challenged Linnaeus with a natural system that took the whole plant into account and sought affinities between all parts of the plant, not just the flowers, as the basic classification. Ampère now wished to do the same thing for chemistry. By discovering a natural classification, i.e., one that tied the elements together by real and rather than artificial relations, Ampère hoped to prove a new insight into chemical reactions. His classificatory scheme, therefore, was not merely an ordering ofthe elements but, like the later periodic table of Dimitri Mendeleev, a true instrument of chemical research. Ampères system was as artificial as Lavoisier's...Thepapermay be noted, however, as an early attempt to find relationships between elements that would bring some order into the constantly growing number of elementary bodies.""(DSB I, p. 143).‎

This new view led within half a century to the work of Dewar and Kammerlingh-Onnes and the liquefaction of all known gases.""(Asimov).Magie: A Source Book in Physics, pp. 187-192. - Parkinson, Breakthroughs: 1869 C.‎

‎"ANDREWS, THOMAS. - THE NATURE OF OZONE‎

‎On the Constitution and Properties of Ozone. Received May 16, - Read June 21, 1855.‎

‎(London, Taylor and Francis, 1856). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from ""Philosophical Transactions"" 1856 - Vol. 146 - Part I. Pp. 1-13 a. 1 lithographed plates.‎

‎First printing of Andrew's paper in which he shows, that ozone is oxygen in allotropic form.Andrews subsequently turned his attention to the problem of the constitution of ozone. This had been investigated by a number of chemists, including Schöonbein, its discoverer. Its nature was still unknown, however, and it was by no means certain that the ozone obtained from different sources was one and the same substance" it was thought by some to contain hydrogen. Andrews says his researches extended over four or five years, and he finally reached the conclusion that all the supposed varieties of ozone were identical and that it was in fact oxygen in an altered or allotropic condition.‎
