n.p. 1936. 1st Printing. Green wrappers with gold cord tie. A VG copy corners and edges rubbed internally clean and bright. Bifolium housed in larger card stock wrappers. Large full color illustrations on upper and lower wrappers. 12-1/2" x 8" <br/><br/>The St. Francis Hotel still stands and operates today as the Westin St. Francis. The building was designed by Walter Danforth Bliss 1874-1956 and William Baker Faville 1866-1946 and built in 1904. The building survived the 1906 with no structural damage however the hotel was gutted by fires. A temporary hotel was built for the guests and the original hotel did not open again until 1907. This hotel housed many prominent guests and stories including Virginia Rappe who was broiled in a scandal with Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle at the hotel and later died due to injuries she received after he assaulted her during a party. Also during the World's Fair in 1939 Salvador Dali took a famous photo of him a in a hotel bathtub with a lobster on his head hold a cabbage. A special piece of San Francisco history. Dishes listed on the menu include "Broiled Filet Mignon with Artichoke Choron Soufflees Potatoes 1.65" "Chicken Liver Brochette with Stuffed Tomato Julienne Potatoes Deviled Sauce 90" and "Crepes Golden Gate 85" for dessert. unknown

Fare includes Turkey Gumbo Soup with Rice $.20; Brass Rail Ham and Cabbage Baked Potato $.85; "Pot of Sanka Coffee or Kaffee Haag" $.25; and many more. The Beverage List suggests a somewhat loose interpretation of Prohibition or else the eager anticipication of its eradication later that year: a typographic box marked "Reserved for Wines and Champagnes" is nestled between the beer list and ginger ales and the beers include Guiness's Stout and several German droughts rather than the typical super-light Anheuser Busch Budweiser varieties manufactured to meet the alcohol level limitations of the time. Full color illustration of a woman on recto. 4-7/8" x 2-2/3" <br/><br/>This small menu is assumed to be from the Wilson House located in Wilson NY. The restaurant and inn was built in 1844 and still is open today. Menu items include oysters from the Providence River "Pickled Lambs' Tongues" and "Lobster a la Commodore". On the recto reads " If love is a nettle that makes you smart Then why do you wear it next to your heart - PATIENCE". A well maintained item from the time. unknown

In 1929 the building’s lease was purchased by Egypt’s premier hotelier Charles Baehler who did his own refurb and reopened the place in May 1929 renaming the hotel the Metropolitan. A G/VG copy soiling foxing and scuffing to wrappers corners and edges rubbed small tear on left side of newspaper clipping pencil markings at head of upper wrapper some rust marks to head of menu and slips due to paperclips internally the menu and slip are clean and bright text legedable. Printed bifolium black lettering two slips with purple ink typed on light yellow paper. Spray painted upper wrapper in red green orange and black paint small newspaper clipping advertising Milligan's is glued to the tail of the upper wrapper. Folio 13-3/4" x 9-1/2" <br/><br/>According to San Francisco City Directories Milligan's operated at two locations from 1922 - 1939. From 1922 - 1930 it was located at 395 Geary Blvd. Geary and 4th Ave. There is no listing in the City Directory for the year 1931 as they changed locations. In 1932 they reopened at 3701 Geary Blvd. Geary and Arguello and they closed their doors in 1939. This menu is from the second location at Geary and Arguello a.k.a. First Ave. The top of the menu reads: "In the preparation of these Mexican and Spanish Dishes mild sweet pepper flavors are carefully blended with the several pugent spices commonly used in Mexico. These dishes are not hot with peppers and to please those who desire strong pepper flavors we have prepared our 'Old Mexico pepper Sauce' which will be served with your order. Being proud of San Francisco and its history we pay homage to the romance of its early days by selecting only the finest recipes from Mexico's most famous haciendas.
