HOTEL ST. FRANCIS MURAL ROOM MENU.; One of the Seven paintings By Albert Herter in the Mural Room of The Hotel St. Francis San Francisco

Large full color illustrations on upper and lower wrappers. 12-1/2" x 8" <br/><br/>The St. Francis Hotel still stands and operates today as the Westin St. Francis. The building was designed by Walter Danforth Bliss 1874-1956 and William Baker Faville 1866-1946 and built in 1904. The building survived the 1906 with no structural damage however the hotel was gutted by fires. A temporary hotel was built for the guests and the original hotel did not open again until 1907. This hotel housed many prominent guests and stories including Virginia Rappe who was broiled in a scandal with Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle at the hotel and later died due to injuries she received after he assaulted her during a party. Also during the World's Fair in 1939 Salvador Dali took a famous photo of him a in a hotel bathtub with a lobster on his head hold a cabbage. A special piece of San Francisco history. Small bifolium inside wine list and two other pieces of ephemera related to the novel "The Maltese Falcon". Menu wrappers with full page/full color illustration by San Francisco artist Dennis Ziemienski. Some smaller illustrations throughout. Menu: 16" x 9" <br/><br/>This menu is inscribed by Elisha Cook Jr. 1903 - 1995 who played Wilmer in the 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon. The inscription reads "Sally & Joe - Best - Elisha Cook". "John's Grill is a historic restaurant in San Francisco California at 63 Ellis Street. The restaurant is famous in part thanks to the novel The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Folio 13-3/4" x 9-1/2" <br/><br/>According to San Francisco City Directories Milligan's operated at two locations from 1922 - 1939. From 1922 - 1930 it was located at 395 Geary Blvd. Geary and 4th Ave. There is no listing in the City Directory for the year 1931 as they changed locations. In 1932 they reopened at 3701 Geary Blvd. Geary and Arguello and they closed their doors in 1939. This menu is from the second location at Geary and Arguello a.k.a. First Ave. The top of the menu reads: "In the preparation of these Mexican and Spanish Dishes mild sweet pepper flavors are carefully blended with the several pugent spices commonly used in Mexico. These dishes are not hot with peppers and to please those who desire strong pepper flavors we have prepared our 'Old Mexico pepper Sauce' which will be served with your order. A NF/VG copy very slight rubbing to corners cord tie is frayed and faded internally clean and bright. Four signatures from people in government who attended the event. 4 pp. unnumbered housed in larger wrappers. Two full page illustrations on upper and lower wrappers 8 smaller vignette illustrations throughout. 9" x 6-3/4" <br/><br/>Duke Ormsby worked for the San Francisco Municipal Railway from 1914 - 1951. Signatures are on the first page. Four signatures from Elmer E. Robinson 1894 - 1982 - 33rd Mayor of San Francisco Duke C. Ormsby - General Superintendent of Transportation who is being honored Chas. D. Miller - Operating Manager Municipal Railway and George W. Evington - Committee. The illustrations on the wrappers depict assumed to be Duke C. Ormsby working and dreaming of fishing by a creek on the upper wrapper and fishing and thinking about work on the lower wrapper. These were done by another member of the committee Chas. L. Reed. One could also say he did the smaller illustrations as well base of style similarities. Dishes served at the event had silly names realting to transportation such as "Crab Salad a la Muni Railway" "Cable Car Poullet" and to drink "High Octane Wine"! Progam started with an introduction from Donald Mazzoni the Master of Ceremonies from Wm. H. Scott a presentation from J. H. Turner Manager of Utilities and ending with a response from D. C. After the earthquake in 1906 the restaurant survived but was unable to stay in business under prohibition. Chef Calixte Lalanne opened the Ritz French Restaurant in 1933 after prohibition had ended. In 1942 when Calixte passed his son opened restaurant under the name Ritz Old Poodle Dog to honor his father. Dishes listed are "Tagliarini or Ravioli with Italian Sauce.45" "Special Creamed Crab a la Chef.75" and "Hearts of Lettuce Hard Boiled Egg Anchovies with 'Ritz' Dressing.50". Menu: 11" x 7"; Slip: 6-1/2" x 3-3/4" <br/><br/>The Oyster Loaf was located downtown San Francisco in the Financial District. It was known for you guessed it! the Oyster Loaf. This dish is claimed to have originated in San Francisco although New Orleans also makes this claim the jury is still out. Basically an oyster loaf is set up the same way as San Francisco's "Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl". It starts with carving out a sourdough loaf buttering the inside pan-frying oysters in bread crumbs then layering them in the carved out loaf until they fill the top about 25-30 oysters while adding lemon and parsley as you go. Then you bake it. Ta-Da! The stamp on the menu reads "GUINNESS AND OYSTERS ARE GOOD FOR YOU" and the stamp on the slip reads "Featuring - Inglenook Sauterne or Burgundy Splits . 15". unknown books
