Bettina Rheims Serge Bramly Bettina Rheims Serge Bramly
Shanghai
powerHouse Books November 2004. Hardcover. Used - Very Good. The women of China are often pictured in the West with an outdated stereotypical image of submissive and subjugated ladies quietly waiting at the beck and call of men. But as famed erotic photographer Bettina Rheims reveals in 'Shanghai' once visitors catch a glimpse of Shanghainese women they will stand corrected. <BR> Throughout China the women of Shanghai are renowned for being beautiful and delicate creatures. But at home they are known as 'tricky wives' who make their husbands do as they say. At the office they are relentless professionals who display equal if not more competitiveness than the men. These women likewise take the lead all over China in fashion displaying such decorous and audacious taste alike as to keep the country watching. <BR>Once a walled village Shanghai has now become China's leading industrial city expanding in such a rush as to leave even its residents in a swirl of expectations. Shanghai is hip trendy and young the city with the highest developing business rate in the world a place of history and tomorrow and as is amply evident in Shanghai a very sexy place. In a tour de force through this ancient city and fabled culture Rheims beautifully stages photographs of real women from all walks of life. Engaged in an ardent search for the spirit of Shanghai's women Rheims and writer Serge Bramly instead found a place so fast-paced so quickly evolving that their quest was rendered moot. Western eyes could not define or encapsulate the ineffable essence of Shanghai's women. <BR>So much can be said of the women in Shanghai the least of which is the ancient Chinese proverb: 'Men have their say but women have their way.' Book has minor shelf wear. Slight scratching/scuffing on cover. powerHouse Books hardcover

Bettina Rheims Serge Bramly - Rose c'est Paris
29 x 40.5 cm 332 pages numerous colored and sw-illustrations bound illustrated book DVD 138 min and booklet in a high-quality case. Signed by both artists numbered and limited to 1500 copies worldwide.<br />"Rose c'est Paris" by Bettina Rheims and Serge Bramly is both a photographic monograph and a feature-length film on DVD. This extraordinary work of art in two different interlocking and complementary formats defies cursory categorization as photographer Bettina Rheims and artist Serge Bramly conjure up the City of Light in a completely new way in this multi-faceted work of poetic symbolism: this is a Paris Surrealist visions confusions of identity artistic phantoms invisible manipulations and obsessions fetishes and seething desire. Rheims and Bramly create a sequence of extraordinary tableaux that suggest all these possibilities and many others. With her flock of extraordinary figures by Naomi Campbell Michelle Yeoh Monica Bellucci Charlotte Rampling Valérie Lemercier Inès Sastre Anna Mouglalis Audrey Marnay Anthony Delon Rona Hartner Jean-Pierre Kalfon Azzedine Alaïa Louise Bourgoin and Hélèna Noguerra From family members models and pornstars to le pipole of the Paris Haute Volée "Rose c'est Paris" is both a delectable visual pleasure and a refreshingly erotic work and a hymn to Paris that undermines all the usual stereotypes. And yet the work remains infinitely mysterious insofar as it plays with genre and narration with allusions and horizons of expectation. Like the city itself it can never quite be summed up only experienced again and again. Text dt. Engl. Frz.<br /><br /> Taschen hardcover

BIBLE IN ENGLISH. THE RHEIMS NEW TESTAMENT
THE NEW TESTAMENT OF IESUS CHRIST TRANSLATED FAITHFULLY INTO ENGLISH OUT OF THE AUTHENTICAL LATIN . . . IN THE ENGLISH COLLEGE OF RHEMES
Rheims: Jean de Foigny 1582. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the Roman Catholic version of the New Testament. 235 x 160 mm. 9 1/4 x 6 1/4". 14 p.l. 745 27 tables glossary and errata pp.Translated by Gregory Martin with William Allen Richard Bristow and William Reynolds as revisers. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the Roman Catholic version of the New Testament. Early 19th century English diced russia gilt fillet border on covers spine panels with gilt fleuron centerpiece gilt titling turn-ins with gilt chain roll marbled edges and endpapers very expert repair to a short portion at head of front joint. Title page with early inscription at foot: "Guil. Har." very likely indicating the name "William Harvey"; marginal notes in the same hand on pp. 320 and 392 pointing out some inconsistencies in the footnotes; title also with 1849 owner signature of John Fairford; last page inscribed in a different early hand "Ei debes quod habes cui debes quod es" a slight adaptation of St. Ambrose's commentary on Luke 18:20 "Honor thy father and mother" meaning "To the one you owe all you have to the other you owe all you are"; below that another inscription noting that "W P" finished reading the text on 29 June 1745; the latter hand may be responsible for manuscript notes on pp. 375 and 465. Herbert 177; Pforzheimer 68; STC 2884; ESTC S102491. Joints lightly worn spine with slight vertical crease a few tiny nicks and very light scratches to boards but the pleasing binding solid and the leather lustrous. Title page very lightly discolored small tears in the margins of two leaves M3-4; neatly repaired without affecting the text but these defects quite minor and in all AN UNUSUALLY FINE CLEAN COPY. Unlike the vast majority of famous 16th and 17th century British Bibles which are typically subjected to frequent use this is an especially well-preserved and appealing copy of the first printing of the first Roman Catholic Bible in English. Translated between September 1578 and July 1580 by Gregory Martin 1542-82 the Rheims New Testament borrowed freely from earlier English versions particularly Coverdale's diglot of 1537 but Herbert tells us it "adheres very closely to the Latin . . . and it exerted a very considerable influence on the King James Bible of 1611 transmitting to it not only an extensive vocabulary but also numerous distinctive phrases and turns of expression." According to Pforzheimer the Rheims translation was "issued by the Roman Church only as a last resort in order to provide its communicants who insisted on a vernacular text with a version not distinctly Protestant both in translation and in marginal comment." DNB notes that "The appearance of a Catholic Bible in English undermined traditional protestant criticism that the Roman church kept scripture out of the hands of the laity. Instead protestant theologians such as Thomas Cartwright William Whitaker and William Fulke attacked the credentials of the translators and denounced their work as filled with error. Despite such criticism revised versions of Martin's translation remained extremely popular throughout the English-speaking world for nearly four hundred years." Much controversy arose from the extensive scathing commentary attacking Protestant interpretations of the scripture added to Martin's work by Richard Bristow; William Fulke was provoked to respond at length. Although the title page of our copy bears the intriguing inscription "Guillaume Harvey" chances are that it did not belong to the famous man of medicine 1578-1657 whose discovery of the circulation of the blood transformed medical science; attested examples of his signature show striking differences in the formation of the letters. No matter who the early William Harvey with an interest in Catholic scripture was his copy of this important edition of the New Testament has come down to us in particularly attractive condition. Offered here with a pleasing copy of the Rheims New Testament in 17th-century calf together comprising the first Roman Catholic version of the Bible in English. The English College at Douai was founded in 1568 by William Allen. In September 1579 Allen announced the project of a new English translation of the Bible. The translation was primarily the work of Gregory Martin 1542-1582 with the revisions of Allen Richard Bristow and William Reynolds. Martin translated the entire Vulgate between September 1578 and July 1580 but the book was published episodically the New Testament with Bristow's notes at Rheims in 1582 and the Old Testament in two volumes at Douai in 1609-10. As a result complete sets in uniform contemporary bindings are a chimera. "The appearance of a Catholic Bible in English undermined traditional protestant criticism that the Roman church kept scripture out of the hands of the laity. Instead protestant theologians such as Thomas Cartwright William Whitaker and William Fulke attacked the credentials of the translators and denounced their work as filled with error.
