Part Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Antoine Arnauld 1612 - 1694 - Le Grand As Contemporaries Called Him To Distinguish Him From His Father - Was A French Roman Catholic Theologian Philosopher And Mathematician. He Was One Of The Leading Intellectuals Of The Jansenist Group Of Port-Royal And Had A Very Thorough Knowledge Of Patristics. He Was One Of The First To Adopt The Philosophy Of Ren� Descartes Though With Certain Orthodox Reservations Relating To Meditations On First Philosophy; And Between 1683 And 1685 He Had A Long Battle With Nicolas Malebranche On The Relation Of Theology To Metaphysics. On The Whole Public Opinion Leant To Arnauld's Side. When Malebranche Complained That His Adversary Had Misunderstood Him Boileau Silenced Him With The Question: "My Dear Sir Whom Do You Expect To Understand You If M. Arnauld Does Not" Later Arnauld Was Engaged In An Extensive Correspondence With Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Regarding The Latter's Views Detailed In His "Discourse On Metaphysics" 1686. Popular Regard For Arnauld's Penetration Was Much Increased In His L'art De Penser Commonly Known As The Port-Royal Logic Which Kept Its Place As An Elementary Text-Book Until The 20Th Century And Is Considered A Paradigmatical Work Of Term Logic. Arnauld Came To Be Regarded As Important Among The Mathematicians Of His Time; One Critic Described Him As The Euclid Of The 17Th Century. After His Death His Reputation Began To Wane. Contemporaries Admired Him As A Master Of Intricate Reasoning; On This Jacques-B�nigne Bossuet The Greatest Theologian Of The Age Agreed With Henri Fran�ois D'aguesseau The Greatest Lawyer. One Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Antoine Houdar Or Houdart Of La Motte Born On January 17 1672 In Paris Where He Died On December 26 1731 Is A French Writer And Playwright . He Held An Important Place In The Literary Life Of His Time By His Writings And His Conceptions. In The Salon Of The Marquise De Lambert Whose La Motte Was One Of The Pillars With His Friend Fontenelle With Whom He Shared An Absence Of Prejudice And A Spirit Of Investigation The Question Was Considered Of Whether Versification Was Indispensable To Poetry. It Was Ultimately Thought That The Verse Rendered The Poet Slave With Superfluous Complicated And Harmful Rules Which Favored The Ankles And Periphrases And Hindered The True Expression Of Poetry. It Was Advocated To Return To The Sharpness And Firmness Of Prose Especially In The Theater For Reasons Of Naturalness. Houdar De La Motte Wanted To Demonstrate That Prose Could Very Well Serve Poetry. He Gave Fenelon's The Adventures Of Telemachus As An Example In This Sense And Put In Prose A Scene Of Mithridates Of Racine.His Reputation Today Rests On The Excellent Prose In Which He Expressed His Views Much Better Than His Verses Hard And Colorless. We Also Remember That He Refrained From Answering A Letter From Jean-Philippe Rameau Who Would Have Liked To Put One Of His Librettos To Music: Probably A Great Opportunity Missed By Houdar De La Motte. But More Than By His Productions It Is By His Role In The Movement Of Ideas And By The Important Place He Occupied In The Literary Life Of His Time That The Name Of Houdar De La Motte Has Reached Us. He Had Also Served With British Forces For Years During The American Revolutionary War And In 1794 During The French Revolutionary Wars. He Took The Additional Surname 'Hastings' In 1790 In Compliance With The Will Of His Maternal Uncle Francis Hastings 10Th Earl Of Huntingdon. James Heath 19 April 1757 - 15 November 1834 Was A Prolific English Engraver. He Enjoyed The Patronage Of George Iii And Successive Monarchs And Was An Associate Engraver Of The Royal Academy. His Earliest Engravings Were Of Portraits In The Collected Edition Of Horace Walpole's Works. He Was Subsequently Employed To Engrave Thomas Stothard's Designs For Harrison's "The Novelist's Magazine" And Bell's "Poets Of Great Britain" And The Taste And Dexterity With Which He Rendered These Small Illustrations Brought This Style Of Illustration Into Great Popularity. He Made Many Engravings After Artists Such As Stothard Smirke And Others And These Were To Be Found In Publications Such As: Sharpe's "British Classics" The "Lady's Poetical Magazine"2 Forster's "Arabian Nights" Glover's "Leonidas" And Many Similar Editions Of Popular Works. He Engraved Some Of The Plates For John Boydell's "Shakespeare" And Also In 1802 Published His Own Six-Volume Illustrated Edition Of Shakespeare. In 1780 He Exhibited Three Engravings At The Exhibition Of The Society Of Artists. In 1791 He Was Elected An Associate Engraver Of The Royal Academy And In 1794 Was Appointed Historical Engraver To George Iii Continuing In That Post Under Successive Sovereigns Until His Death. He Engraved Some Large Plates Notably "The Dead Soldier" After Joseph Wright Of Derby "The Death Of Nelson" After Benjamin West "The Riots In Broad Street. 1780" After Francis Wheatley "The Death Of Major Pierson" After J S Copley "Titian's Daughter" After Titian"The Holy Family" And "The Good Shepherd" After Murillo "The Holy Family" After Raphael Etc. He Worked First In Stipple And Afterwards In Line Sometimes In Conjunction With Others Keeping A Large Number Of Pupils Working Under His Direction. He Re-Engraved The Existing Set Of Hogarth's Plates And Completed The Engravings Of Stothard's "Canterbury Pilgrims" Left Unfinished By Schiavonetti At His Death. He Also Engraved Numerous Portraits. Ten Years Later He Inherited The Earldom Of Cardigan From His Brother George Montagu 1St Duke Of Montagu The 4Th Earl Of Cardigan. Joseph Goupy 1689-1769 Was A Painter Watercolorist Scenographer And Engraver Of French Origin Who Spent His Entire Career In England And Was For A Time Close Collaborator Of Georg Friedrich Handel. His Reputation Peaked In 1724 When George I Asked Him To Restore Andrea Mantegna's Triumph Of Caesar At Hampton Court Castle For Which He Was Paid � 200 . That Year George Vertue Reports In His Notes That Goupy Participated Alongside The Painter Peter Tillemans In The Development Of Paintings For Scenographies For The Haymarket Opera House A Work For Giulio Cesare In Egitto From Handel. In 1727 His First Official Work For The Royal Academy Of Music Was The Painted Decorations Of Handel's Riccardo Primol. In Addition Goupy Engraved A Scene Drawn From The Life Of Caius Mucius Scaevola Partly Carried To Music By Handel. He Also Produced During This Period Two Suites Of Engravings For The Duke Of Devonshire The Duke Of Rutland And Jonathan Richardson . He Also Gave Drawing Lessons To Young Aristocrat Robert Spencer 1701-1729 To Countess Dorothy Savile Boyle The Wife Of Lord Burlington Who Was A Remarkable Portraitist And To Mark Catesby. 1720-1730 Date Most Of His Engravings After Landscapes Of Italian Masters. In 1735 He Worked With William Hogarth To Finally Pass The Engraver Copyright Act Protecting The Engravers From Piracy Of Their Work. Maria Luisa Caterina Cecilia Cosway Ma-Rye-Ah; N�e Hadfield; 11 June 1760 - 5 January 1838 Was An Italian-English Artist Who Exhibited At The Royal Academy Of Arts In London. She Also Worked In France Where She Cultivated A Large Circle Of Friends And Clients And Later In Italy. She Commissioned The First Portrait Of Napoleon To Be Seen In England. Her Paintings And Engravings Are Held By The British Museum The New York Public Library And The British Library. Her Work Was Included In Recent Exhibits At The National Portrait Gallery In London In 1995-96 And The Tate Britain In 2006. Cosway Was An Accomplished Composer Musician And Society Hostess With Her Husband Painter Richard Cosway. In 1784 The Cosways Moved Into Schomberg House Pall Mall And Developed A Fashionable Salon For London Society. Richard Cosway Was Principal Painter Of The Prince Of Wales And Maria Served As Hostess To Artists Members Of Royalty Including The Prince And Politicians Including Horace Walpole Gouverneur Morris And James Boswell. She Could Speak Several Languages And Due To Her Travels In Italy And France She Gained An International Circle Of Friends. These Included Angelica Schuyler Church And The Artist John Trumbull. Maria Cosway Organised Concerts And Recitals For Her Guests. She Became Known As "The Goddess Of Pall-Mall". She Developed A Close And Probably Short Romantic Relationship With The Widowed American Statesman Thomas Jefferson In 1786 While He Served In Paris As The American Envoy To France. Before Jefferson Left Paris He Wrote Her "I Am Going To America And You Are Going To Italy. One Of Us Is Going The Wrong Way For The Way Will Ever Be Wrong That Leads Us Further Apart." Cosway Introduced Jefferson To Her Friend Angelica Schuyler Church The Sister-In-Law Of His Rival Alexander Hamilton. In France Cosway Founded A Girls' School In Paris Which She Directed From 1803 To 1809. Soon After It Closed She Founded A Catholic Convent And Girls' School In Lodi Northern Italy Which She Directed Until Her Death. Maria's Brother George Hadfield Became An Architect And Designed Arlington House In Virginia; It Later Was Owned By Robert E.
