br. Nella vera, tragica anima di Michelangiolo perdura, anche in mezzo a rapinose tempeste, un fondamentale spirito religioso, ho voluto tener conto soprattutto di quelle poesie dove più vibra e canta (o grida) il senso del divino, sia che tragga alimento dal platonismo cristiano-ficiniano, sia che affondi le sue radici nella pura ortodossia cattolica. Così balza netta l'incomparabile figura dello scultore poeta. La tragedia di Michelangiolo non poté cessare che con l'ultimo battito del suo cuore. Anche lui, certo, come Dante, ebbe una tenace fede religiosa; ma era, quella fede, simile ad una fiamma che, sebbene inestinguibile, fu continuamente combattuta da "contrari venti". Le rime della vecchiezza sono la sua più alta, profonda, tragica, religiosa e conclusiva poesia. E infatti, proprio durante l'ultima stagione della sua vita egli raggiunge, con la penna, quasi la stessa potenza già conseguita coi colori e coi marmi. Spirito sempre in lotta con la materia, come i suoi Prigioni incompiuti, egli canta il proprio sforzo eroico, il proprio angoscioso anelito all'infinito, a Dio.
