Die Kunsthistorikerin Robin Richmond zeigt, daß die Restaurierung Michelangelos Werk nach Jahrhunderten wieder in seiner tatsächlichen Farbigkeit zum Vorschein brachte und sich dadurch auch die Einschätzung Michelangelos in der Kunstkritik grundlegend änderte. Sie beschreibt die Entstehung des Sixtinischen Deckenfreskos und führt den Leser zunächst in die Welt Michelangelos sowie in die Zeit der Renaissance in Italien ein. Spannend erzählt die Autorin die Vorgeschichte zu dem großartigen Gemäldeprojekt, das der junge Künstler im Auftrag des Papstes ausführte. Im Hauptteil des Buches werden die wichtigsten Bildfelder und Motive erläutert und interpretiert. Eine Ausklapptafel zeigt die ganze Sixtinische Decke auf einen Blick. Die Autorin erklärt eingehend die Technik der Freskomalerei, um dann einen fundierten Einblick in die Methoden der Restaurierung und deren Ergebnisse zu geben. Vergleichende Bilder zeigen den Zustand der Fresken vor und nach der Restaurierung.
