This deluxe art volume Grandi Monografie d’Arte a cura di Paolo Lecaldano is a scholarly and detailed examination of Mantegna’s decorative artwork The Camera picta "painted chamber" also popularly known as the Camera degli Sposi or "bridal chamber"—is a room frescoed with illusionistic paintings by Andrea Mantegna in the Ducal Palace Mantua Italy. It was painted between 1465 and 1474 and commissioned by Ludovico Gonzaga and is notable for the use of trompe l’oeil details and its di sotto in sù ceiling. The "Court Scene" on the north wall shows Ludovico Gonzaga dressed informally with his wife Barbara of Brandenburg. They are seated with their relatives while a group of courtiers fill the rest of the wall. The figures interact with an illusionistically expanded space is depicted. On the west wall is the "Meeting scene". This fresco shows Ludovico in official robes in an ideal meeting with his son cardinal Francesco Gonzaga the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III and Christian I of Denmark. Mantegna’s playful ceiling presents an oculus that illusionistically opens into a blue sky with foreshortened putti playfully frolicking around a balustrade. September 1506 in Mantua) war ein italienischer Maler und Kupferstecher. Seine Malerei ist von der Auseinandersetzung mit Werken der Bildhauerei, insbesondere des toskanischen Bildhauers Donatello, beeinflusst. ... 1449 ist er am Hof von Ferrara nachgewiesen, wo er Werke Rogier van der Weydens und Piero della Francescas kennenlernt. 1452 kehrt er nach Padua zurück, um seine Arbeiten an der Lünette in der Basilika des Heiligen Antonius in Padua zu beenden. Danach begab er sich in den Dienst des Marchese Luigi III. Gonzaga nach Mantua, wo er eine eigene Malschule eröffnete. Hier malte er seinen Großen Triumph des Julius Cäsar in neun Kartons. Diese wurden später mehrfach verkauft und gelangten bis nach England in den Besitz der britischen Krone. Bedeutender für seinen späteren Werdegang war die Zusammenarbeit mit Niccolò Pizzolo (um 1420-1453), einem Gehilfen Donatellos an den Fresken der Eremitanikirche in Padua (1448-1457). 1453 heiratete Mantegna Nicolosia Bellini, die Schwester Giovanni Bellinis. 1456 wurde Mantegna von Markgraf Luigi III. Gonzaga als Hofmaler nach Mantua berufen, in dessen Diensten er blieb, ungeachtet seiner Tätigkeit in Florenz, Pisa und Rom 1488/89. Mantegnas Werk hatte erheblichen Anteil daran, dass die eher unbedeutende Stadt Mantua zu einem Zentrum der bildenden Kunst wurde. Nach Rom wurde Mantegna vom Papst Innozenz VIII. berufen, um im Belvedere zu malen. In Rom entstand "eine Menge trefflicher Bilder, die aber heute äußerst selten sind". Mantegna gilt als der eigentliche Vollender des von der Florentiner Schule aufgestellten Kunstideals: Die Figuren sind monumental, streng, voller Ernst und Würde; die Gegenstände und Raumbegrenzungen sind in scharfer Zeichnung und mit bewusst angewandten perspektivischen Mitteln (auch oft übertrieben) dargestellt. Die Farben sind oft hart aneinandergesetzt, das Körperliche in seiner Plastik stark herausgearbeitet, wobei besonders die Anatomie des nackten Körpers ausführlich dargelegt wird. Die Bindung an die Antike zeigt sich besonders stark in der statuarischen Gelassenheit der Figuren, auch findet man Darstellungen antiker Bildteile oder Architekturen in seinen Werken. Außer den Fresken in der Eremitanikirche in Padua, mit Darstellungen aus dem Leben des Heiligen Jakobus und der Himmelfahrt Mariä, gehört zu seinen Hauptwerken der Hochaltar von San Zeno in Verona (1456-1459), wo zum ersten Mal in der oberitalienischen Kunst des Bildtypus der Sacra Conversazione dargestellt wurde. Sein Hauptwerk aus seiner Zeit in Mantua ist die Ausmalung der Camera degli Sposi im herzoglichen Palast zu Mantua (Castello di San Giorgio, 1465-1474): Diese ist die erste illusionistische Raumdekoration mit einem Deckenbild, das einen Durchblick in einen freien Raum vortäuscht. Auch schuf Mantegna hier das erste Gruppenporträt. Ausgezeichnet waren auch die Kupferstiche des Mantegna: Mit "vortrefflicher Zeichnung" erzielten sie beim Verkauf gute Erlöse.‎
