Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri / Victor Joze
Reine de Joie Color Lithograph Poster Toulouse-Lautrec
Andre Sauret Paris 1951; Color lithograph of Toulouse-Lautrec’s avant-garde advertising poster commissioned in 1892 to promote sales of the novel "Reine de Joie" by popular nineteenth century author and Lautrec personal friend Victor Jozé. The poster incited a controversy for depicting a Parisian courtesan the heroine in the book bestowing a kiss upon her wealthy benefactor high society banker Baron de Rozenfeld in gratitude for an especially lavish "business arrangement." It was widely believed that the character of de Rozenfeld was modeled by Joze after real-life international financier Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and Rothschild reportedly attempted to prevent distribution of the poster and book. A plate from the "Les Affiches de Toulouse-Lautrec" collection of reduced-size Lautrec poster prints published by Andre Sauret in 1951. Finely wrought in authentic color lithograph on double weight paper bearing the Sauret watermark by legendary Paris lithographers Mourlot Freres employed by Sauret for the work. Exhibition hinged and matted acid free ready for framing. Overall size 14" x 17" plate size 10 1/4" x 12 3/4" image 8" x 11 1/4". Fine condition. Clean crisp bright colors vivid. Andre Sauret unknown
