‎Paris: Maeght 1959. A handsome French production First edition deluxe issue number 5 of 50 copies printed on Montval paper and signed by the artist and the poet. This is Pierre Reverdy's final poetry collection "The Freedom of the Seas" illustrated in this grand edition by his lifelong friend George Braque. Reverdy stopped writing poetry during the Second World War but had a surge of inspiration resulted in this collection and one other "Au soleil du plafond". This collection was completed in 1955 but was unpublished until Braque finished his illustrations in 1959 just before the poet's death. A further 200 signed copies on Grand Velin D'arches paper were issued simultaneously. This copy is without the additional lithographs issued with the deluxe limitation. Large folio. With 7 full-page colour plates including cover and frontispiece monochrome lithographs throughout. Original brown illustrated wrappers sheets loosely inserted as issued. With the original grey cloth folder and slipcase. Occasional foxing to contents especially to final gathering; folder and slipcase mottled with a few splits at joins. A very good copy. hardcover‎

Scarce. 4 pp.The Perls Gallery in New York was founded in 1937 by Klaus Gunther Perls 1912-2008 and his brother Franz R. Perls1910-1975 after having worked at their mother's Galerie Kate Perls in Paris. Following his marriage to Amelia Blumenthal of Philadelphia in 1940 Klaus and Amelia B. Perls jointly ran the gallery. They specialized in modern French painting while Franz established the Frank Perls Gallery in Beverly Hills He originally dealt in works by Maurice Utrillo Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy that his mother sent from Paris until the Nazi occupation. When she was forced to flee France he began dealing in now little known contemporary American artists including Darrel Austin and in Mexican and South American art such as Mario Carreno. After the war Klaus again dealt in French art from the School of ParisArtists in the Perls' stable included Rouault Picasso Léger Derain Dufy Matisse Modigliani Pascin Soutine and Vlaminck. Ces notes commencent à l'époque où, grièvement blessé sur le front, trépané et contraint à une longue convalescence, il renoue peu à peu avec l'exercice de la peinture et rédige de courtes maximes qui sont publiées dans la revue Nord-Sud l. Elles s'achèvent (provisoirement) l'année où il peint la Chaise, thème qui lui est cher et qu'il développe encore pendant plusieurs saisons. Il y consigne en quelque cent pages les idées qui ont et qui demeurent ses compagnes dans la solitude de son atelier, qui l'ont peut-être tourmenté et qui l'ont fait s'interroger sans relâche avant de devenir des convictions. C'est un vade-mecum qu'il remet entre les mains du voyageur qui décide de s'embarquer pour aborder cette terra ingognita, si proche qu'on la croirait à portée de main et pourtant si lointaine, presque inaccessible. Pierre Reverdy, dans la Note éternelle du présent qu'il rédige à propos de la démarche de Braque, explique en quoi elle lui importe tant : " Donc, les objets, dans la forme où il plaît à Braque de me les rendre sensibles, sont les termes de son langage. Vous le pensez bien, ce qui m'intéresse chez un peintre, ce n'est pas ce qu'il voit (...), mais ce qu'il pense et qu'il me le dise et me le montre en peignant, précisément... " Au début de son ouvrage, Braque déclare avec assurance à propos de la réalité : " Ce n'est pas assez de faire voir ce qu'on peint. Il faut encore le faire toucher. " Et, pour appuyer son propos, il dessine une théière, semblable à toutes les théières qu'il peint ou qu'il grave sur pierre à l'époque où paraît ce livre. Elle paraît faire écho à ces mots de Reverdy : " La poésie est dans la formation d'un objet de remplacement susceptible de combler au c?ur de l'homme le vide qu'y produit l'absence d'un objet réel désiré, de tout le réel désiré.
