1993. New York Alfred A. Knopf 1993. 25 x 29 cm. XVII 318 pages. Original Softcover. Very good condition with minor signs of external wear. The Barnes Foundation is an American educational art and horticultural institution with locations in Merion Pennsylvania a suburb of Philadelphia; and Logan Square Philadelphia. It was founded in 1922 by Albert C. Barnes a chemist who collected art after making a fortune by co-developing an early anti-gonorrhea drug marketed as Argyrol and selling his company at the right time before antibiotics came into use. Today the foundation owns more than 2500 objects including 800 paintings estimated to be worth about $25 billion. These are primarily works by Impressionist and Modernist masters but the collection includes many other paintings by leading European and American artists as well as ancient works from other cultures. In the 1990s the foundation's declining finances led its leaders to various controversial moves including sending artworks on world tours and proposing to move the collection to Philadelphia. A 2009 documentary The Art of the Steal argued that the foundation had been taken over by other non-profit institutions. After numerous court challenges the new Barnes building opened on Benjamin Franklin Parkway on May 19 2012. The foundation's current president and executive director Thomas Thom Collins was appointed on January 7 2015. Wikipedia paperback

At the age of fourteen he started his wandering around Europe getting to know some of the most influential avant-garde artists of the time such as Lajos Kassák Pablo Picasso Marc Chagall Henri Rousseau Tristan Tzara Hans Richter Chaim Soutine and Blaise Cendrars with whom they published the anarchist magazine “Les hommes nouveauxâ€. In 1915 in Zürich he got acquainted with the leaders of the communist movement Lenin and Trotsky. He published several books on artists and numerous articles and essays in various art magazines. Text in French. <br /> <br /> IDHEC was founded in Paris during World War II in order to offer training for virtually every aspect of film production. It counted a veritable who's who of prominent filmmakers among its graduates including Louis Malle Claire Denis Jean-Jacques Annaud Volker Schlöndorff Andrzej u awski and Costa-Gavras among many others. Resnais attended IDHEC for one year from 1943-1944 training as a film editor before leaving in 1945 for military service. <br /> <br /> "Gauguin" was part of an early series of documentary short films about artists created by Resnais between 1946 and 1953 preceded by "Van Gogh" 1949 winner of an Academy Award and followed by "Guernica" 1950 in collaboration with Robert Hessens.<br /> <br /> 8.25 x 10.75 inches. Il volume è il catalogo della mostra di Napoli (Museo di Capodimonte, 15 ottobre 2003 - 15 gennaio 2004). Pubblicato in occasione delle celebrazioni per il centenario della morte di Paul Gauguin, il volume riunisce quasi trenta sue opere (eseguite tra il 1886 e il 1894, anni corrispondenti ai cinque soggiorni bretoni del maestro) affiancate da quelle degli artisti appartenenti alla Scuola di Pont-Aven realizzate nella celebre località bretone tra la seconda metà degli anni Ottanta dell'Ottocento e il primo decennio del Novecento. Una panoramica sulla produzione meno nota di Paul Gauguin (quella del periodo bretone) e su quella di una colonia di artisti che, lontana dal clamore della vita parigina e dalla dolcezza del paesaggio provenzale, ha operato a Pont-Aven in anni in cui il soggiorno di Paul Gauguin ha sollecitato innovative soluzioni formali. La presenza di Gauguin in Bretagna (in modo discontinuo dal 1886), da cui si è frequentemente allontanato per raggiungere mete lontane ed esotiche, ha determinato la formazione della cosiddetta ‘Scuola di Pont-Aven’, cioè di un gruppo di artisti che, influenzato dalla dirompente originalità del suo linguaggio, ha saputo innovare gli stanchi stilemi di una tradizione pittorica ancora accademica. In particolare, l’incontro, fortunato e proficuo, tra Paul Gauguin ed Émile Bernard ha condotto all'elaborazione di una tecnica, il ‘sintetismo’, basata sulla conoscenza delle stampe giapponesi e del ‘cloisonné’, antica tecnica con cui venivano realizzate le vetrate medievali. Si proponeva, in tal modo, il superamento della lezione degli impressionisti, contrapponendo alla loro ‘impressione’ la traduzione in pittura della visione soggettiva-simbolista. I soggetti, non ritratti dal vero, ma recuperati da immagini mnemoniche, vengono caricati di continui rimandi simbolici, espressi con forme e colori. Pubblicato in occasione delle celebrazioni per il centenario della morte di Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), il volume che accompagna la grande esposizione itinerante – che dopo la tappa di Parigi e Quimper approda finalmente a Napoli – riunisce circa cento opere eseguite da Gauguin tra il 1886 il 1894 (anni corrispondenti ai soggiorni bretoni del maestro) affiancate da quelle dai principali artisti della Scuola di Pont-Aven: tra i nomi più significativi spiccano quelli di Émile Bernard, Paul Sérusier, Claude-Émile Schuffenecker, Roderic O’Conor, Henry Moret, Maxime Maufra, Charles Filiger, Roderic O’Conor, Cuno Amiet e Maurice Denis.
