‎Longue lettre autographe datée d'août 1896 et signée de Paul Gauguin adressée au peintre Daniel de Monfreid. Quatre pages à l'encre noire sur deux feuillets. Petites déchirures marginales sans atteinte au texte, traces de pli inhérentes à l'envoi. En pleine descente aux enfers, abandonné dans son paradis artificiel tahitien, Gauguin se sent maudit : "Décidément, je suis né sous une mauvaise étoile" se lamente-t-il.Sa quête de liberté primitive le laisse dans le dénuement et la misère. Souffrant le martyre, le peintre envoie des tableaux à l'un de ses rares soutiens, son fidèle ami Daniel de Monfreid - mais se trompe d'adresse... Publiée dans les Lettres de Paul Gauguin à Georges-Daniel de Monfreid, 1918, p. 146, n° XXIII ; notre lettre révèle le nom d'Émile Schuffenecker, son ami et comparse de la bourse de Paris puis de Pont-Aven - anonymisé dans la version publiée - que Gauguin vilipende à de nombreuses reprises dans ces pages. Cette exceptionnelle missive est écrite à Tahiti, où le peintre était retourné l'année précédente, faisant sesadieux définitifs à la vieille Europe. Gauguin ressort tout juste d'un séjour à l'hôpital de Papeete afin de soigner ses jambes meurtries à la suite de coups reçus à Concarneau deux ans plus tôt, pour avoir défendu sa muse, Annah la javanaise. Le peintre n'échappe pas aux séquelles de cette altercation et souffre d'un terrible eczéma purulent à la jambe mais aussi de sa syphilis, noyant ses affres dans l'alcool. Les lettres de Gauguin de l'été 1896, dont celle-ci est un parfait exemple, "sentent la fièvre qui s'est emparée d'un esprit surchauffé par la douleur et le manque de sommeil" (David Haziot). Dans sa confusion,le peintre a mal rédigé l'adresse de l'atelier de Monfreid à la Cité Fleurie,célèbre résidence d'artistes aux allures de chalet où Gauguin avait séjourné: "Je vous ai envoyé le mois dernier un paquet de tableaux. J'ai bien peur pour eux car il me semble que j'ai mis 55 Bd Arago au lieu de 65". Dans cet envoi, figurait sa composition Eihaha Ohipa, peinte dans son atelier de Punaauia et désormais conservée au musée Pouchkine de Moscou. Expédiées par l'intermédiaire d'un officier de marine - le port restant à la charge de Monfreid - les toiles n'arriveront qu'en novembre. Au-delà de ses craintes enfiévrées, Gauguin livre dans ces lignes un véritable manifeste de son intégrité d'artiste - pendant parfait de son célèbre autoportrait christiquePrès du Golgothaque le peintre réalise à la même période. Tout comme dans cette toile, son destin se confond avec celui du Christ :"dans les moments les plus difficiles de ma vie j'ai plus que partagé avec des malheureux et sans jamais d'autre récompense que le lâchage complet".Il avait en effet imposé les toiles de Schuffenecker dans des expositions impressionnistes, sauvé son ami Laval du suicide, et ouvert sa bourse à tant d'autres. Au lieu de lui rendre la pareille, Schuffenecker préfère se lamenter sur son propre sort : "Schuff m'écrit vraiment une lettre insensée et injuste et je ne sais que répondre car c'est un esprit malade [...] qu'il est plus malheureux que moi qui ai la gloire la force la santé. Parlons-en ! Jesuis doué dit-il à en rendre les autres jaloux". Gauguinqui s'est toujours refusé à transiger et se compromettre, est finalement trahi par une de ses plus proches relations, Schuffenecker, qui devient dans la lettre un véritable Judas Iscariote :"Schuff vient de faire une pétition inutile je crois, pour que l'État vienne à mon aide. C'est la chose qui peut le plus me froisser. Je demande aux amisde me venir en aide pendant le temps qu'il faut pour rentrer dans mon argent qui m'est dû, et leurs efforts pour le recouvrer, mais mendier à l'État n'a jamais été mon intention". Le peintre arrive à un point de non-retour, non seulement meurtri dans sa chair, mais dans son amour-propre :"Tous mes efforts de lutte en dehors de l'officiel,la dignité que je me suis efforcé d'avoir toute ma vie, perdent de ce jour de le‎
