ill. La presente pubblicazione è dedicata a Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) e alla sua pittura che è alla base dell'arte moderna. Di agiata famiglia provenzale, compie studi regolari durante i quali si lega d'amicizia con Emile Zola. Abbandona poi gli studi di diritto per dedicarsi alla pittura e si reca a Parigi. Frequenta l'ambiente degli impressionisti e nel 1874 Pissarro lo convince a partecipare alla prima mostra del gruppo. Col passare del tempo la sua ricerca si fa sempre più solitaria: rompe con Zola, si ritira in campagna ad elaborare un suo stile personale: un'indagine rigorosa sui rapporti fra colore e volumi, nutrita di concretezza, ispirata alla natura della Provenza e attenta alle strutture compositive della natura morta.
