br. L'incontro con la grande arte di Cézanne ebbe una importanza fondamentale nell'evoluzione espressiva della poesia di Rilke, un'importanza che lo stesso Rilke ebbe più volte a riconoscere, fino a dichiarare di aver seguito, dopo la morte del Maestro, le sue tracce in ogni luogo. Le lettere alla moglie qui raccolte, scritte in margine alle reiterate visite che Rilke fece alla grande retrospettiva di Cézanne tenutasi a Parigi nel 1907, un anno dopo la sua morte, sono la testimonianza di un interesse che doveva sfociare in vera devozione; e basti pensare che il poeta arrivò a confessare, di fronte ad una Montagne Sainte-Victoire del pittore provenzale, che nessuno, dai tempi di Mosè, aveva saputo guardare una montagna in maniera tanto maestosa.

br. Cézanne è stato chiamato da Peter Handke "maestro dell'umanità", titolo che gli compete pienamente a partire dall'insegnamento che dalla sua opera ha saputo trarre uno dei massimi poeti del secolo, R.M. Rilke. Cézanne è entrato in Rilke "come una freccia fiammeggiante" accendendo in lui "un incendio di chiaroveggenza" che lo ha accompagnato per tutta la vita e gli ha rivelato il senso ultimo dell'opera d'arte: il compito dell'artista di fronte a se stesso e al mondo. Senza questo incontro Rilke non sarebbe diventato Rilke. Senza l'"insegnamento" di Cézanne il nostro secolo non avrebbe conosciuto nulla della poesia, o meglio del pensiero, che ha preso forma nelle Elegie duinesi e nei Sonetti a Orfeo.
