This double number of Verve contains the drawings made by Chagall in 1958 and 1959 on biblical themes which in general he had not dealt with in his illustrations for the Bible reproduced in Verve 33/34. The present work comprises 96 reproductions in black and white and 24 lithographs in color as well as a cover specially designed for this volume. The heliogravure in black and white by the master printers Draeger Freres and the lithography in color by Mourlot Freres were completed in Paris on the 29th of July 1960. The full edition was 225 copies 200 of which were numbered and 20 marked hors commerce both without the additional signed print. Malraux winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature provided the text based on a previously unpublished manuscript from 1939 about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. Perls1910-1975 after having worked at their mother's Galerie Kate Perls in Paris. Following his marriage to Amelia Blumenthal of Philadelphia in 1940 Klaus and Amelia B. Perls jointly ran the gallery. They specialized in modern French painting while Franz established the Frank Perls Gallery in Beverly Hills. He originally dealt in works by Maurice Utrillo Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy that his mother sent from Paris until the Nazi occupation. When she was forced to flee France he began dealing in now little known contemporary American artists including Darrel Austin and in Mexican and South American art such as Mario Carreno. After the war Klaus again dealt in French art from the School of Paris.Artists in the Perls' stable included Rouault Picasso Léger Derain Dufy Matisse Modigliani Pascin Soutine and Vlaminck. Marc Chagall 7 July 1887 28 March 1985 was one of the most celebrated and beloved artists of the 20th century. Born Marc Zakharovich Shagal in Vitebsk Belarus then part of the Russian Empire he trained in Saint Petersburg before moving to Paris in 1910 where he became part of the vibrant avant-garde of Montparnasse. Drawing on Jewish folk tradition Russian culture and the imagery of his Belarusian childhood Chagall developed a uniquely dreamlike visual language infused with lovers floating above villages fiddlers on rooftops animals angels and mystical biblical scenes. Associated with Fauvism Cubism and Surrealismyet belonging to nonehe was the quintessential 'School of Paris' master. His monumental stained-glass windows ceiling paintings including the Paris Opéra and tapestries brought his vision to public spaces worldwide. Chagall's work is held at MoMA in New York the Tate in London the Centre Pompidou in Paris the Guggenheim and the Musée National Marc Chagall in Niceinaugurated in 1973 and dedicated to his biblical message cycle.
