His manifesto outlines among other demands eight-hour working days for the equine community and the prohibition of the making of sausages out of their corpses. A thinly veiled political allegory Goll uses the plight of the working horses to attack capitalism and the exploitation of the working class. Quarto. FRAMED: 129 x 87 x 6 cm.<br /> This piece comprises some of Chagall's more well-known and loved compositional elements. Taking up the majority of the image is a beautiful bouquet of flowers which is admired by a woman in a vibrant red dress in the foreground. The presence of the cockerel thought to symbolise the artist's alter-ego appears to look longingly up at the small town in the distance. We know this town to be Saint Paul de Vence in the hills above the French Riviera a mecca for many artists including Matisse Picasso Magnelli Léger. Chagall returned to the town many times throughout his life and just before turning 80 he had a home built there in 1966. Upon his death in 1985 Chagall was buried in the cemetery of Saint Paul de Vence further highlighting the significant impression this place had on the artist's life.<br /> M. 979 1980. unknown

Signed by Chagall on the limitation and title-page. Written over five years at the end of the long pilgrimage that brought Gogol to Germany Switzerland France and Italy 'Dead Souls' offers a vivid and ruthless portrait of a small swindler in provincial Russia in 1820. Published for the first time in 1842 the novel went on to exert a huge influence over the development of Russian literature. <br /><br />In 1923 the French publisher Ambroise Vollard asked Chagall to produce an illustrated edition. Chagall who had always felt a strong emotional connection to the country where he spent his youth agreed with enthusiasm and pursued the project between 1923 and 1927. At the centre of the image is a monumental bouquet of lilacs in a vase surrounded by floating figures and animals. The presence of the horse and the cockerel allude to the artist's self-representation with the former often thought to depict himself and the latter to symbolize his alter-ego. At the left of the bouquet are distant traditional wooden Russian dwellings typical of Chagall's childhood home in Vitebsk now in Belarus which the artist made the subject of his art from his very earliest creations. According to Jean-Michel Foray the former director of the Marc Chagall Museum in Nice however we shouldn't push too hard in trying to 'decrypt' what the scenes mean: 'We cannot interpret them because they are simply part of Chagall's world like figures from a dream.'<br /> M. 975 1980. unknown

The images are from his Bible Series which he created from 1931-1939 and 1952-1956 after traveling to the Holy Land in 1931. Chagall was commissioned to illustrate the Bible Series by art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard who believed the Bible was “the most important piece of literature of all time and the cornerstone of Western tradition†Andrew Weiss Gallery. <br /> <br /> Marc Chagall 1887-1985 was a Belarusian and French artist who created works in many different mediums including painting drawing stained glass ceramics and tapestries. He began making lithograph prints in 1922 and worked with master lithograph printer Charles Sorlier to push the boundaries of color lithography. Chagall was an early modernist painter and was associated with the School of Paris. Chagall writes: "In honor of the president and my good friend Z. Shazar with love Marc Chagall Jerusalem 1964". It can be assumed that Shazar's friend gave him the book as a gift and Marc Chagall who was present at the time also inscribed it to him.<br /> <br /> This monograph showcases Marc Chagall's graphic work from the years 1922-1957 and includes a total of 148 images reproducing the artist's work. Most images are in b/w with six in color and can be divided roughly into five major stages of Chagall's career: etchings for his autobiography - illustrations for Gogol's "Dead Souls" 1923-27 - etchings for La Fontaine's "Fables" 1927-30 - illustrations for the Bible - his post-war lithographs. All images are finely printed mostly in high quality offset with a few b/w images being lithographic.<br /> <br /> Dust jacket with some minor to light rubbing and creasing to extremities.
