Il volume ripercorre la straordinaria vita di Marc Chagall, presentando con un'ampia carrellata di immagini le sue opere più importanti e significative, che lo hanno consacrato come uno dei maestri riconosciuti dell'arte moderna del XX secolo, delicato e sognante poeta del colore. Il volume è pubblicato in occasione della mostra "Marc Chagall" presso il MUDEC, - Museo delle Culture di Milano (10 marzo -31 luglio 2022). Marc Chagall nasce nel 1887 nel villaggio di Vitebsk, in Bielorussia, nel 1910 si trasferisce a Parigi, dove conosce i principali artisti dell'epoca, tra cui Braque, Picasso, Robert Delaunay e Léger. Allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, Chagall torna a Vitebsk e successivamente si trasferisce a Mosca nel 1920, lavorando a decorazioni sceniche e dipingendo i pannelli per il teatro ebraico d'avanguardia. Con il peggiorare della situazione politica nell'Unione Sovietica lascia Mosca nel 1923, facendo ritorno in Francia, dove continua a lavorare nonostante il crescente antisemitismo. Con l'invasione della Francia da parte della Germania nel 1939 la sua situazione diventa quasi insostenibile: nel maggio del 1941 parte per gli Stati Uniti. Nel 1946 una grande retrospettiva al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York ripercorre 40 anni di lavoro, contribuendo in modo determinante alla sua notorietà internazionale. Rientra nell'amata Parigi nel 1948, dedicandosi a scenari e costumi per il balletto Daphne e Chloe per l'Opéra, mentre la sua reputazione continua a crescere: le sue opere vengono esposte in gallerie e musei di tutto il mondo, compresi il Louvre e il Petit Palais di Parigi. Muore il 28 marzo 1985 a St. Paul de Vence, dove viene sepolto.

Icona e raffigurazione. Bachtin, Malevic, Chagall
ill., br. In Michail Bachtin la teoria della creatività artistica è fondamentalmente rivolta allo studio della letteratura. Essa però si presta ad essere messa in rapporto ed in dialogo con la ricerca artistica nell'ambito del visivo, e in particolare, relativamente ai nostri interessi, con la pittura. Ciò non è dovuto tanto al fatto che nell'opera bachtiniana si possano trovare riferimenti alle arti visive o al fatto che l'estetica bachtiniana spesso allarghi il proprio discorso spostandolo dal campo della letteratura a quello della produzione artistica in generale. La possibilità di far incontrare dialogicamente la ricerca bachtiniana con quella pittorica dipende piuttosto dal ruolo che in entrambe gioca la raffigurazione in contrasto con la riproduzione, la rappresentazione, l'imitazione. La questione riguarda la concezione e l'impiego dei segni, ed è quindi di ordine semiotico. E il segno che è direttamente coinvolto nella ricerca pittorica di Kazimir Malevic? e di Marc Chagall, come pure nella teoria della raffigurazione estetica di Bachtin, è l'icona. Tale tipo di segno occupa un posto centrale anche nella semiotica di Charles Sanders Peirce in quanto maggiormente capace di innovazione e di inventiva.
