Yet there remains uncharted territory on the map of the master's extensive oeuvre which spanned one of the most tumultuous experimental periods of art history: the seaside figural scenes that fascinated Picasso throughout his life. From his early Cubist period in the first years of the century through his classicizing phase and into his late work of the 1960s Picasso returned again and again to this sand-and-sea theme. Even in 1937 when he was so powerfully engaged with the horrors of the Spanish Civil War sketching preparatory drawings for 'Guernica' he was also busy executing a group of decidedly non-political works representing bathers. The resulting paintings including 'On the Beach'also known as 'Girls with a Toy Boat' recall his earlier 'Three Bathers' from 1920. Here as elsewhere Picasso developed a series of novel approaches to form and content methods whose richness and radical unconventionality derive from the artist's observations of the uninhibited movements of bodies in open air. The subject of bathers so close to the heart of many of the 20th century's most important artists is illuminated in this richly illustrated volume. Full-color reproductions present some 130 works from across Picasso's creative periods. Los Angeles: LA County Museum of Art 1966. Book. Fair. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Very little publication data is given last page states "5000 copies printed in Los Angeles Sept. 1966." Hardcover given price we will detail the flaws with care. The 3rd thru 12th pages are loose at the top 1/2 of the gutter no evident damage to binding itself but the pages in this group have a 1/2" tear at the gutter almost as though this was the trigger for the looseness. The affected pages are text only lists of trustees lending institutions etc. Picasso date of death penned inside front cover. Prev. owners name penned first endsheet. Book has a number of cosmetic issues board ripple and back board exterior wave as made I am sure. All this said the boards are clean and unbumped the text is clean and attractive with one bit of flecking noted on one sheet. We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately. Books listed by Brass Dolphin are so described and graded using the strict traditional standards. ILLUSTRATED BROADSIDE WITH FACSIMILE'S OF PICASSO'S 1917 LETTERS TO GERTRUDE STEIN & JEAN COCTEAU.
F.E.M. 1994. 1994. Very good. - sc - A 30 inch high by 20 inch wide broadside printed on fine tissue paper with text from Picasso's letters to Gertrude Stein and Jean Cocteau. The letters reproduced in facsimile across 3 columns consist of Picasso's letter to Gertrude Stein penned from Rome in April of 1917. This letter is printed 3 times in the first column between illustrations and decorations. Printed in the center of the broadside and lower half of the right column are facsimiles of a letter to Jean Cocteau penned from Rome in April of 1917. At the top and bottom right are fragments of letters to Jean Cocteau dated January 15 1917 discussing arrangements for the trip they are planning to Rome where the two will seek to collaborate on a ballet with Diaghilev. Reproductions of photographs of the artist as well as illustrations of art work by Picasso and Cocteau decorate the broadside. The text of the letters are in French with a quote from Picasso printed in English at center right "I sensed it say it / painted it; and yet the / next day I can't see / what I've done myself. / How can anyone enter / into my dreams". Folded three times horizontally and once vertically. There is a light brownish stain at lower left. Very good. <p>In February of 1917 Picasso traveled to Rome with Jean Cocteau. The artist had originally planned this as a wedding trip but his fiancee and sometime mistress Irene Lagut changed her mind. Instead he went to Rome with Cocteau in order to collaborate on his modern ballet "Parade". Through Picasso's Chilean patron Eugenia Errazuriz they were successful in enlisting Diaghilev's Russian Ballet to produce it with choreography by Leonide Massine and a score by Erik Satie. Picasso of course created the set and decor. In a program note Guillaume Appolinaire described the ballet as "une sorte de surrealisme" a kind of surrealism this three years before Surrealism was coined to describe the emerging art movement.<p>The original letter penned by Picasso to Gertrude Stein is in Yale's collection.<p>RARE. There is spotting to the rear wrap with a red stain & a small area of the surface rubbed away. 62 pages plus a section of black-and-white illustrations. Also with 2 color plates including a frontispiece. The bottom page corners are lightly bumped & there is occasional foxing & soiling. Good. <p>Third edition. Laid in is a three-page addition to the catalog listing ten paintings from the Hermitage Museum Leningrad and from the Pushkin Museum Moscow. These were ten of thirteen paintings from Russia which the Arts Council had requested and which it finally managed to obtain although only a week or two after the exhibition had opened.
