‎The primary goal of Ludovico Carracci and the Art of Drawing is to provide a ground-breaking model for a new kind of book on Italian drawings. In addition to covering the traditional scholarly terrain of chronology, style, and connoisseurship, this book utilizes up-to-date art historical methods, including considerations of the historical context of Bologna, its impact on Ludovico's art, and a new portrayal of the role of women and women artists in the city. "Bologna is perhaps the last great artistic capital in Europe that...still offers the specialist the possibility for ground breaking studies." This quotation from a recent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum testifies to the rich possibilities for research in this field. In 1983, Sydney Freedberg wrote a book on the three pivotal innovators in Italian painting at the turn of the seventeenth century: Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, and the latter's cousin Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619). The dramatic intensity of Ludovico's paintings exerted a seminal influence on the direction of Italian Baroque painting. His highly individual renditions of his subjects make him one of the great interpreters of Italian art. Working in Bologna, the second city of the papal states, during the period of the Counter Reformation, Ludovico was well positioned to reshape religious painting during a period that demanded change. Ludovico was a prolific draftsman who produced over 300 extant drawings. His drawings offer the key to his artistic personality, because he conceived his original subjects and planned his dramatic compositions in these sheets. Like most Italian artists of the early modern period, Ludovico developed his ideas in drawings and began painting only after his conceptions had been finalized. Thus his drawings reveal how he thought, how his ideas changed, and which features of a composition were most important or challenging to his creative imagination. Such drawings as these have tremendous appeal to modern audiences, who are attracted by the excitement of watching the creative process in progress, rather than seeing only the painting that represents the end of that process. The Carracci have always been considered some of the most important draftsmen in Italian art, for their revival of drawing the human figure from life in the course of designing paintings. But Ludovico's drawings were not only preparatory studies for pictures. He was also an innovator in developing finished compositional drawings that were produced as works of art in their own right, made for sale to a new audience of private collectors in Bologna. This book will be indispensable for university libraries, museum libraries, and the private libraries of all scholars, dealers, and collectors with a serious interest in Italian art. Il est orné de 20 gravures d’après Pierre de Jode exécutées sur les compositions d’Augustin Carrache gravées par Coiny qui ont pour sujet: «Vénus génitrice. Paris et Oenone. Angélique et Médor. Le Satyre et la Nymphe. Julie avec un athlète. Hercule et Déjanire. Mars et Vénus Culte de Priape. Antoine et Cléopâtre. Bacchus et Ariane. Polyenos et Chrisis. Le Satyre et sa femme. Le Satyre saillissant.» « Avant de parler aux amateurs de l'ouvrage que nous leur présentons, nous allons donner une notice de la vie de deux hommes célèbres ; l'Arétin et A. Carrache. Pierre Arétin, fils bâtard de Louis Bacci, gentilhomme d'Arezzo, naquit vers l'an 1492. Il fit l’essai de son talent poétique par un sonnet contre les indulgences. Il s'attaqua ensuite aux rois, et les outragea avec une hardiesse si brutale, qu'il fut appelé le fléau des princes. »«L'Arétin étoit d'une impudence envers les souverains au delà de toute expression. Il répondit à un trésorier de la cour de France qui venoit de lui payer une gratification : « Ne soyez pas surpris si je garde le silence. J'ai usé mes forces à demander, il ne m'en reste plus pour remercier. » On conte que ce poète satyrique se mit si fort à rire, entendant des discours comiques et obscènes, qu'il renversa la chaise sur laquelle il étoit assis, et qu'en tombant il se blessa à la tête et mourut sur l'heure à Venise, en 1556, âgé de 66 ans. Augustin Carrache naquit à Bologne, en 1560, et devint peintre, comme son frère. «Les gravures de A. Carrache représentant les postures érotiques, étoient devenues si rares, que bien des personnes doutoient de leur existence.» « C'est une circonstance extraordinaire qui les a fait tomber en nos mains. Un officier français de l'armée d’Italie, à son entrée à Venise, fut assez heureux que de pouvoir rendre quelques services à la femme d'un sénateur. Cette dame lui témoigna sa reconnoissance de plus d'une manière ; et entre autres cadeaux, lui donna cette collection, précieuse sous tous les rapports. Arrivé en France, il nous a confié cette œuvre, et secondés de plusieurs artistes, nous nous sommes empressés de la faire connoître au public, qui nous saura gré de lui avoir procuré cette jouissance.» “In 1798, a similar set of engravings were printed known as "L’Aretin d'Augustin Carrache”. Though this edition is often thought of as another edition of I Modi, it bares little resemblance to the original. Though the engravings are very good, there are few similarities between these engravings and the 1550 woodcuts or the Waldeck version of I Modi. One difference of note between L’Aretin d’Augstin Carrache and I Modi is that the engravings in L’Aretin d'Augustin Carrache are all based on mythological scenes whereas the I Modi engravings make no attempt to tone down the eroticism by hiding behind die historical precedent of depicting nudity through mythology (it's not pornographic if the participants are Gods).” «(…) La scène se passe près du port de plaisance La Vigne sur le Bassin d’Arcachon, chez un jeune antiquaire... Les mimosas ont leurs yeux jaunes. Elle entre dans la boutique par curiosité... Le jeune antiquaire lui raconte qu'il est tombé sur un lot exceptionnel de livres anciens ayant appartenu à un vieux Bordelais... Une collection de livres érotiques, dont la moitié est encore dans la malle. Elle fouille, feuillette, a des idées. L’antiquaire lui tend alors un livre qui date de la fin du XVIIIe siècle : « L'Arétin d'Augustin Carrache » publié « A la nouvelle Cythère ». Cet ouvrage contenait 20 gravures dont 19 ont été vulgairement arrachées sûrement pour être vendues à l'unité. Ne subsistent que la dernière, intitulée Satyre saillissant, et le texte anonyme, très imprégné de la littérature érotique du XVIIIe (Les postures érotiques), Crébillon Fils, Rougeret de Monbron, Diderot, Mirabeau... Quand elle m'offre ce livre, aussitôt me vient l'idée de remonter le courant de son histoire, de retrouver les gravures manquantes. J'en découvre un exemplaire complet dans l’Enfer de la Bibliothèque Nationale, accompagné d'une notice biographique de l'auteur du texte Simon-Célestin Croze-Magnan (1750-1818), littérateur, peintre et musicien. J'étais alors persuadé d'avoir fait toute la lumière sur cet ouvrage lorsque, trois ans plus tard, je rencontrai A. qui écrivait un article sur les frères Carracci. Au détour d'une conversation, il me signala qu’Agostino Carracci (1557-1602), bien moins célèbre que son frère Annibale, était cependant l'auteur d'un chef-d’œuvre, Les Lascives, sur lesquelles il cherchait à mettre la main. Je lui dis alors que je possède chez moi les photocopies de ces gravures…» Précieux volume qui a de tout temps suscité de fortes enchères, l’un des rares conservé dans sa reliure de l’époque en plein veau marbré.
