Chardin Sir John. with an introduction by Sir Percy Sykes
Sir John Chardin's Travels in Persia
London: Argonaut Press 1927. Hardcover. 287p. illustrated all present including two fold out illustrations facing pages 212 and 216. Number 126 of 975 copies so noted at colophon. Covers soiled as is the somewhat dulled spine. Front cover has blind stamped decoration highlighted in gilt. Inward bend to corners. Front pastedown endpaper shows glue residue from bookplate removal. Pages show edge wear foxing and age-toning. Rear pastedown endpaper has partially removed library label stamped "CANCELLED" library markings in pencil around the label. Originally released in ten volumes in the seventeenth century the first version of this two volume English language edition from 1720 was planned to have eight volumes issued by subscription. "It seems quite obvious that the response did not merit its continuation. The publisher Mr. J. Smith must have had a large number of these first two volumes on his hands and tried every means to sell them. The first attempt was by erasing the word "eight" on the title page and substituting "two.".This 1927 edition according to the preface is the first reprint of that English edition. Sir John Chardin's Travels in Persia
London: The Argonaut Press 1927. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Number 628 of 975 copies quarto size 318 pp. Sir John Chardin 1643-1712 was a French merchant and traveler; the publication of the first volume of his "Voyages du chevalier Jean Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l'Orient" simultaneously in French and English in 1686 permitted Chardin to "position himself as one of the most important arbiters of European commercial and colonial expansion. Over the next decade two successive editions of his 'Travels' were published in England along with reprints of his 1671 'Le Couronnement de Soleiman Troisieme.' In 1711 with the publication of the four-volume edition of his 'Travels' Chardin provided a full and authoritative account and abbreviated editions followed in rapid succession testifying to a nearly insatiable European interest in oriental studies and culture. By the time of his death in 1712 Chardin's chronicles of life and society in Persia had become one of the fundamental texts for this burgeoning field of study and his meticulous accounts of the country earned him the praise of Gibbon Montesquieu and Voltaire" ODNB.

This edition reprints the edition of 1720 correcting some printer's errors and updating the spelling of some names and includes facsimiles of the title-pages for the 1724 and 1720 editions as well as a portrait of the author by David Loggan and several plates. London: Printed for Moses Pitt in Duke Street Westminster 1686. First Edition in English. Leather-bound. Good. Quarto. Contemporary English panel calf boards 417 5 pp. index. 11 7/8" x 7 1/2" sympathetically rebacked in mottled calf on hempen cords. Contrasting spine label of gilt on maroon Rubbing to extremities. Marbled endpapers and edges. 12' x 20' elaborate foldout frontis map of the Black Sea. Handwritten in two places: "Marshall Lister's Book 1785" once on the verso of the mounted title page bordered by elaborate doodles followed by a line of what appears to be shorthand; the second inscription at the top of the first page. Most curiously opposite the "Epistle Dedicatory" are printed the words: "Let this BOOK be Printed".

The dedicatory itself rather over the top adulatory addressed to the King concludes: "I might advance in this parallel where. Your Majesty has so much the advantage if I did not find my Eyes dazled when I attempt to fix them upon Your Majesty." On his first trip in 1665 he travelled through Persia and to Isfahan the Persian capital. There he gained access to the court of Shah Abbas II to whom he became the personal merchant jeweller. After extensive travelling through Persia studying the religion and culture he returned to Paris in 1670. Later in 1671 Chardin left again for the East and meeting with many difficulties and dangers took two years to reach Persia by way of Constantinople and Southern Russia. From Persia he proceeded to India and returned to France by way of the Cape of Good Hope in 1677. Among the numerous fine engravings are folding views of Tiflis Erivan Isfahan Persepolis etc. and some beautiful plates of architecture and costumes.
