Chardin made two trips to Persia the first in 1665 and the second in 1671 as a traveller and trader in jewels. Near contemporary half polished calf over marbled boards; a bit rubbed. A very good copy of the atlas from the most desirable edition enhanced with new and larger plates. 'Chardin was a Huguenot who was forced to emigrate to England. He was knighted by Charles II and on his death was buried in Westminster Abbey. His first visit to the East was made in 1665 at the age of twenty-two when he both gratified a love of travelling and carried on his trade as a dealer in jewels. His more important voyage was made in 1671. His route differed from that usually taken by travellers to the East Indies in that he proceeded by way of the Black Sea and the countries bordering thereon' Cox I p 249-250. 'Chardin set out for Persia for a second time in August 1671 but on this occasion diverted through Smyrna and Constantinople and took the Black Sea Route to Caucasia Mingrelia and Georgia finally arriving at Esfahan in June 1673. In Georgia he heard of a race of warlike women the Amazons who had at some time in the recent past invaded a kingdom to the northwest. He remained in Persia for four years as he says 'chiefly following the court in its removals but also making some particular journeys. as well as studying the language.' He apparently knew Esfahan better than Paris and visited nearly every part of the country. His account of the Persian court and his business transactions with the shah are of considerable interest. Covers soiled as is the somewhat dulled spine. Front cover has blind stamped decoration highlighted in gilt. Inward bend to corners. Front pastedown endpaper shows glue residue from bookplate removal. Pages show edge wear foxing and age-toning. Rear pastedown endpaper has partially removed library label stamped "CANCELLED" library markings in pencil around the label. Originally released in ten volumes in the seventeenth century the first version of this two volume English language edition from 1720 was planned to have eight volumes issued by subscription. "It seems quite obvious that the response did not merit its continuation. The publisher Mr. J. Smith must have had a large number of these first two volumes on his hands and tried every means to sell them. The first attempt was by erasing the word "eight" on the title page and substituting "two.".This 1927 edition according to the preface is the first reprint of that English edition. Number 628 of 975 copies quarto size 318 pp. Sir John Chardin 1643-1712 was a French merchant and traveler; the publication of the first volume of his "Voyages du chevalier Jean Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l'Orient" simultaneously in French and English in 1686 permitted Chardin to "position himself as one of the most important arbiters of European commercial and colonial expansion. Over the next decade two successive editions of his 'Travels' were published in England along with reprints of his 1671 'Le Couronnement de Soleiman Troisieme.' In 1711 with the publication of the four-volume edition of his 'Travels' Chardin provided a full and authoritative account and abbreviated editions followed in rapid succession testifying to a nearly insatiable European interest in oriental studies and culture. Fuyant la France en 1681, avant même la promulgation de l'Edit de Fontainebleau, il se réfugia à Londres, où Charles II le nomma bijoutier de la Cour.
