Seine frühen Werke weisen, aufbauend auf der katalanischen Volkskunst, Einflüsse des Kubismus und des Fauvismus auf. Von Anfang bis Mitte der 1920er Jahre vollzog der Künstler in Paris, beeinflusst von den dort herrschenden Kunstströmungen des Dadaismus und Surrealismus, den grundlegenden Stilwechsel, der ihn von der Gegenständlichkeit wegführte. Miró gehört als Vertreter der Klassischen Moderne mit seinen fantasievollen Bildmotiven zu den populärsten Künstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts.
