The first volume is inscribed "A Monsieur Rudolf Carnap/ Hommage de/ Georges Matisse" on front free end-paper and both volumes carry the signature of Carnap in pencil on front wrappers. Although now largely forgotten Georges Matisse 1874-1961 was a prominent thinker and a remarkable scholar who was considered important and influential in his own time. He contributed with several publications to the fields of science and philosophy and all of them are considered solid and interesting. His most famous works consist in the thee-volume cycle "La philosophie de la nature" 1938 "Le Rameau vivant du monde" 1947-49 and "L'Incoherence universelle" 1953-56 all published by the Presses Universitaires de France. The present work is thus published before what can be considered his actual breakthrough and represents us with thoughts very much in vogue at the time.As the title indicates the present work discusses the question of the motion of the appearances of nature towards their final aim. "L'explication des phénomènes naturels par l'idée de causes finales qui les dirigent est fréquemment adoptee encore." Vol. I Introduction. The first part of the work demonstrates that certain general principles do not apply to all appearances or that these principles contain something totally different than that which the non-physic could expect. "Malheureusement Presque tous ceux qui emploient le langage téléologique pour conter les événements croient que la finalité constitue une explication scientifiquement valuable c'est-à-dire qui precise les conditions necessaries et suffisantes de genèse du phenomena." Vol. I Introduction. The second part deals with the appearances of the living nature. Matisse tries to show that neither the way that the organisms are built nor the functions of the organs can be explained as striving towards an aim. This is explained among other things by the fact that many developments in nature lead not to the perseverance of the individual or the species but on the contrary to the death of it.The work evoked somewhat of an interest in the field of philosophy of science and was viewed as a valuable contribution to the answering of questions that occupy a position on the border of philosophy and science. In his own time Matisse was considered important and influential within this field. He attended the famous "Congrès International de Philosophie Scientifique" in Paris in 1935 which was organized primarily by Carnap. The present work was written shortly after this congress and published shortly before the first part of his main work. Carnap seems to have read the introduction in which there are a few pencil-underlinings and he has probably been more interested in the general thesis against teleology and preformation as a scientifically valuable explanation of the phenomena of nature than in the more thorough explanation of his ideas.Matisse graduated in biophysics in 1918 in Paris but early on he became interested in mathematics physics and epistemology the three fields of which are united in this interesting treatise. unknown‎

‎"POISSONS CHINOIS" Original Color Lithograph‎

‎Paris: Teriade 1958. Original color lithograph after a Matisse cut-out that was a maquette for a stained glass window and one of the artist's final works. Signed and dated in the stone. The lithograph was drawn under the supervision of Matisse who signed only a few of the stones--it has been reported that he signed only those that especially pleased him. This lithograph was completed in 1951 but published in its first and only edition in the deluxe French art review Verve in 1958. There was not a pencil-signed edition. The image is 12 1/2 inches by 6 inches on a sheet of wove paper that is 13 1/2 inches by 10 inches. The lithograph is clean and bright. Now archivally matted in an off-white passe-partout. ‎Apollinaire.‎

‎Paris: Raisons d'Être 1952. Matisse and Rouveyre's homage to Apollinaire First edition thus first printing number 233 of 300 on vélin d'arches from a total edition of 350 with the chemise and slipcase in unusually nice condition. The friendship between the caricaturist and writer André Rouveyre 1879-1962 and the artist Henri Matisse 1869-1954 left a trail of art works and a correspondence of over 1100 letters. They met at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Paris in 1898. After losing touch for a while the two friends later reunited and exchanged daily correspondence as they both lived in the South of France where they had fled the World Wars. The present work is an homage to their mutual friend the writer and poet Guillaume Apollinaire 1880-1918 who famously coined the term "calligram" being a contraction of "calligraphy" and "ideogram" that is text written in a shape related to its contents rather than linearly. Folio. Aquatint frontispiece 6 full page and 1 smaller lithographic portraits decorative initials wrappers and chemise by Henri Matisse. Original illustrated wrappers gatherings loose as issued. With the glassine. Housed in publisher's chemise and blue slipcase. Wrappers lightly toned faint offsetting chemise boards a little bowed and rubbed some wear to slipcase extremities rubbed head and foot of fore edge just starting a very good copy indeed. hardcover‎

A curious relatively early letter about housekeeping at his villa and studio - a private matter - boldly signed. A very handsome presentation. Can be purchased without frame if requested.

English translation:
"My dear friend I have received your enclosed letter from Hannigou and I'm forwarding it to you that it might be a use. I have written asking the Notary to replace one of the beds of the villa behind with an iron one . . . and to get rid of the sofa in the workshop which like the bed has bedbugs. See to it that he responds. I would have liked to have gone to see you to tell you all this but I haven't had time today and I believe the situation is pressing.
In Friendship and all the best
H. Matisse
1/03/1909"

Matisse was a French artist known for his use of colour & his fluid brilliant & original draughtsmanship. As a printmaker & sculptor but principally as a painter Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve wild beast by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.1 His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art. ‎MATISSE, HENRI‎

‎Cinquante Dessins par Henri Matisse‎

‎Paris: The Author Matisse 1920. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION WITH SIGNED MATISSE ETCHING. A BEAUTIFUL COPY. Cinquante Dessins is “a book of drawings published at Matisse’s expense with an introduction by Charles Vildrac. Vildrac explains Matisse’s return to the figure as an attempt to redress the modernist gap opened between art and life. Since the figure was neglected by contemporary art concerned with the probing and reconstitution of the painting elements themselves Matisse is returning to the ‘moral character’ of painting its human content. Like the older masters he again ‘attunes his style to the style of the model’ and eschewing both the current archaizing and modishness he searches out with humility the grave character of the model by intelligent deduction and by imagination. Written in close collaboration with the painter this is an important statement on Matisse’s Nice manner of the early 1920s.†Weiss 97.

With 50 full-page plates of Matisse’s drawings of women in addition to the frontispiece etching of Matisse’s daughter “Mlle. M.M†signed in ink by Matisse below the image. Produced to coincide with Matisse’s exhibition of the drawings at Bernheim-Jeune in 1920. One of 1000 copies issued although in most extant copies the signed frontispiece has now been removed.

With preface by Charles Vildrac. Paris: The Author 1920. Quarto approx. 8 1/2 x 12 in. original wrappers; custom box. Splits to text block as usual and with the usual light uniform toning from the tissue guards. The original wrappers in particular the spine are notoriously fragile – this copy is a very rare survival with the wrappers in nearly perfect condition. Note: Without the rare dust jacket issued in some copies in Pierre Matisse’s possession. The Author Matisse unknown‎
