ALCAFORADO, Marianna - MATISSE, Henri
LETTRES PORTUGAISES.
- ENGLISH DESCRIPTION: Henri MATISSE - M. ALCAFORADO : LETTRES PORTUGAISES. Lithographies originales de Henri Matisse (1946). Paris, Tériade, 1946. Vol in-4 (27.5 x 22 cm), in loose sheets under illustrated cover with a lithograph, titled folder and publisher's slipcase. - 105 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS BY HENRI MATISSE : 15 full-page portraits printed in bistre, 55 ornaments printed in purple including 5 full-page, 35 initials lithographed in purple. - Edition: 270 copies all on Arches paper signed by the artist. This one n° 93 signed in ink by Matisse (Impression Jourde et Allard for the text and Mourlot Frères for the lithographs). - HISTORICAL NOTE: The "Portuguese Letters" appeared for the first time, anonymously, in 1669. These five admirable love letters evoke the novel of a French officer in the service of Portugal. Having seduced a nun, sister of one of his comrades in arms, and having abandoned her, he replied, on his return to France, only coldly to the letters full of ardor that the young woman addressed to him. The way in which Marianna Alcaforado analyzes the stages of her passion is striking, and this poem of amorous disappointment has more to do with the literary art of seventeenth-century France than with the age of the convent. It was believed that the "hero" of the adventure was a certain Chevalier de Chamilly, but it quickly appeared that the author of this "literary deception" was Count Laverne de Guilleragues, a friend of Racine and one of Madame de Maintenon, who was to become ambassador to Constantinople. As for the heroine, a contemporary note on a copy of the first edition of the book, discovered in 1810, designated her as Marianna Alcaforado, from Béjà, between Extremadura and Andalusia. - BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: Matisse was bewitched by this work, nearly a hundred editions of which had been published since its inception. He entirely designed the work on which he worked for many months. He designed a special alphabet and adorned the book with initials, decorations and motifs of pomegranates, peaches and almond blossoms, drawn in purple, and fifteen full-page female faces, an admirable continuation where the initial purity of the face of the nun evolves over the course of the very violent passions that cross her, faces where femininity and love are composed, perhaps thus summarizing the deepest concerns of designer Matisse... Matisse chose a 14-year-old Russian girl, Doucia Retinsky, the daughter of a shopkeeper in Nice, as his model. Undeniable artistic and editorial success, the book also enjoyed great commercial success since all the copies found takers before the end of 1946. - Scarce copy in original condition. Signed by Matisse. Perfect condition of preservation. Bibliography: Duthuit Henri Matisse Illustrated Books No. 15, p. 89 to 107. Additional photographs of the book on request.

ALFREDO DE PAZ
FOTOGRAFIA E SOCIETà DALLA SOCOLOGIA PER IMMAGINI AL REPORTAGE CONTEMPORANEO
LIGUORI 2001 596 PP.

Anne Baldassari John Elderfield Henri Matisse Pablo Picasso Elizabeth Cowling John Elderfield John Golding Isabell
Matisse Picasso
Museum of Modern Art July 2002. Hardcover. Used - Very Good. Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso have long been seen as the twin giants of modern art as polar opposites but also as complementary figures. Between them they are the originators of many of the most significant innovations of 20th-century painting and sculpture but their relationship has rarely been explored in all of its closeness and complexity. In spite of their initial rivalry the two masters eventually acknowledged one another as equals becoming in their old age increasingly important to one another both artistically and personally. From the time of their initial encounters in 1906 in Gertrude and Leo Stein's Paris studio until 1917 they individually produced some of the greatest art of the 20th century and maintained an openly competitive relationship brimming with intense innovation. This period saw them create such works as Picasso's majestic 'Woman with a Fan' of 1908 and Matisse's great portrait of his wife of 1913. Matisse responds to Synthetic Cubism in his 'Piano Lesson' of 1916 and Picasso comes back in turn with a new more decorative Cubism in 'Three Musicians' of 1921. The 20s saw them grow apart as Matisse moved from Paris to Nice and Picasso became involved with the Surrealists but the 30s brought them together again through their sheer fame and devotion to reality-based art. Their story continues until Matisse's death in 1954 when Picasso paid his friend and colleague tribute in his series 'Women of Algiers' of which he said 'When Matisse died he left his odalisques to me as a legacy.' 'Matisse Picasso' presents the artists' oeuvres in groupings that reveal the affinities but also the extreme contrasts of their artistic visions. Published to accompany the landmark exhibition a joint effort of The Museum of Modern Art New York; the Tate Modern London; the Raunion des musaes nationaux/Musae Picasso and the Musae national d'art moderne/Centre Georges Pompidou Paris; 'Matisse Picasso' is the first major examination of the fascinating relationships between their art their careers and their lives. Thirty-four essays each by a member of the exhibition's curatorial team focus on a particular moment in the artists' evolving relationship. The authors present in-depth analyses of specific aspects of the unique artistic dialogue between Matisse and Picasso as reflected in selected juxtapositions of each artist's works. These texts are accompanied by an introductory history commentary on the public perception of important artistic relationships and an extensive chronology. Out of print. Wrapped in Brodart dust jacket protector. Small tear in back dj. Hardcover Museum of Modern Art hardcover
