Ces périples deviennent possibles dès 1870, après l'ouverture du Canal de Suez et du chemin de fer transcontinental américain. Ils connaîtront un engouement considérable dès la parution en 1872 du roman mythique de Jules Verne, "Le Tour du Monde en 80 jours". La guerre met, en 1914, un terme à cette pratique, qui reprendra dans les années 1920, mais dans des conditions nouvelles avec l'ouverture des lignes aériennes.</span><br><span>Les tours du monde touristiques sont définis comme des circuits effectués autour de la planète dans le but d'en faire le tour et pour des raisons non-professionnelles. On ne s'intéresse donc ici ni aux diplomates, écrivains ou étudiants qui font le tour du monde dans le cadre de leur activité. Le circuit doit constituer une boucle ; il doit croiser tous les méridiens. En revanche, il ne passe pas nécessairement par tous les continents ni par les deux hémisphères, et peut être plus ou moins long selon la latitude suivie et les détours qui l'éloignent de la ligne droite.</span><br><span>Plusieurs dizaines de milliers de touristes, occidentaux pour la grande majorité, font ainsi un tour du monde entre 1869 et 1914. Plus de 250 publient le récit de leur voyage. Cette activité reste réservée à des personnes fortunées et oisives.</span><br><span>Le tour du monde s'impose à la fin du XIXe siècle comme un motif central de la culture occidentale, attestant d'un nouvel imaginaire géographique et d'un nouveau rapport au monde : le globe devient le terrain de jeu des Occidentaux, qui en font le tour en propriétaires. Professor der Geburtshilfe an der Wiener Universität wurde zu seiner Zeit als ""eine Autorität ersten Ranges"" auf diesem Gebiet angesehen Die auch bei anderen Ausgaben Steidelscher Werke verwendete allegorische Titelblattvignette mit einer Darstellung der römischen Göttin der Geburtshilfe Lucina wurde von Johann Christoph Reinsperger 1711-1777 die Tafeln mit den Abbildungen verschiedener Instrumente von Franz Assner 1742-1810 gestochen. Steidele 1737-1821 from Innsbruck the predecessor of Boer was professor of theoreticl midwifery in Vienna and author of a number of books in his field. The present treatise on bleeding is nicely illustrtated wiht rather pittoresque engraved title-vognette which depicts the cuase of blleding to death on the battle field. J. Steidele 1737-1823. Ab 1774 wirkte und lehrte er als Wundarzt 1797-1816 war er Professor für theoretische Geburtshilfe an der Universität Wien. S. förderte durch seine geburtshilflichen Werke die Ausbildung der Hebammen und die Verselbstständigung der ärztlichen Geburtshilfe von der Chirurgie. Insbesondere befaßte sich S. mit der Diätetik Physiologie u. Pathologie der Geburt sowie mit operativen Maßnahmen. - Ausführliches Lehrbuch für Hebammen in 4 Teilen mit Abschnitten über Schwangerschaft Entbindung bei falschen Kindslagen Zwillingsgeburten etc. und auch einem Kapitel: ""Wie sich Hebammen zu verhalten haben welche auf gerichtliche Verordnung verdächtige Weibsperson besichtigen und darüber ihre Bericht abstatten müssen."".
