[PONS, Rafael, and Eduardo G. Gordon], probable authors.

Compilados por un Republicano.
Imprenta de el Republicano. FIRST EDITION. 4° contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards worn at corners plain flat spine defective at head. In very good condition overall. xxxxxx 107 1 pp. a-e4 d4 e6 12 5-124 136. Pp. 53-4 appears to be a cancel. FIRST EDITION; there is a Montevideo 2007 edition. Tipped on to the rear pastedown endleaf is a vertically printed leaf reading "AL LECTOR" and signed in print by the publishers "LOS EDITORES" explaining why portraits promised in the title are not present.According to recent investigation "Un Republicano" is the pseudonym for Eduardo G. Gordon and Rafael Pons. Pons has been identified as the author of the majority of the texts.San Antonio de Padua de la Concordia usually shortened to Concordia is a small city in the Argentine province of Entre Rios. According to Miguel A. Andreetto El periodismo de Entre Rios Bruenos Aires: Academia Nacional de Periodismo 2009 Luis Rebuelta owner of the first Concordia newspaper El Progresista introduced the first printing press to Concordia when he established his newspaper in 1858. The newspaper El Republicano owned by Euduardo G. Gordon was established in 1860. Six other newspapers began printing in Concordia between 1859 and 1865.The Uruguayan War was fought between the governing Blancos and an alliance of the Empire of Brazil with the Colorados who were supported by Argentina. In 1863 the Colorado leader Venancio Flores launched the Liberating Crusade aimed at toppling President Bernardo Berro and his Colorado–Blanco coalition Fusionist government. Flores was aided by Argentina's President Bartolomé Mitre. The Fusionist coalition collapsed as Colorados joined Flores's ranks. The Uruguayan civil war developed into an international crisis that destabilized the entire region. Even before the Colorado rebellion the Blancos had sought an alliance with Paraguayan dictator Francisco Solano López. Berro's now purely Blanco government also received support from Argentine Federalists who opposed Mitre and his Unitarians. The situation deteriorated as the Empire of Brazil became drawn into the conflict. Brazil intervened to reestablish the security of its southern frontiers and its influence over regional affairs. In a combined offensive against Blanco strongholds the Brazilian–Colorado troops advanced through Uruguayan territory eventually surrounding Montevideo. Faced with certain defeat the Blanco government capitulated on 20 February 1865.The short-lived war would have been regarded as an outstanding success for Brazilian and Argentine interests had Paraguayan intervention not led to the long costly and bloody Paraguayan War which lasted until 1870. In February 1868 former Presidents Bernardo Berro and Venancio Flores were assassinated. The siege of Paysandú began on 3 December 1864 during the Uruguayan War when Brazilian forces under the Marquis of Tamandaré and Colorado forces under Venancio Flores attempted to capture the city of Paysandú in Uruguay from its Uruguayan Army defenders. The siege ended on 2 January 1865 when the Brazilian and Colorado forces conquered the town shortly prior to the fall of Montevideo. The preliminary sections of the book contain brief biographies of some of the principals in the defense of Paysandú. José MarÃa Leandro Gómez Calvo better known as Leandro Gómez Montevideo 1811-Paysandú 2 January 1865 was a Uruguayan military officer and politician. A member of the National Party he is best remembered for his heroical defense during the Siege of Paysandú in 1864 pp. xxv-xxxiii though it must be said that he employed some pretty brutal measures. Lucas PÃriz Concepción del Uruguay Entre RÃos 1806-Paysandú 2 de enero de 1865 was a Blanco Party military officer who lost his life in the defense of Paysandú pp. xxxv-xxxxxi. Fighting beside Leandro Gómez he was wounded on January 1 and died the following day. Teniente Coronel Pedro Rivero Paysandú 1829-Paysandú 2 January 1865 died that same day pp. xxxxxii-xxxxxvii. Coronel Emilio Raña Paysandú 1833-Paysandú 4 January 1865 was wounded on 31 December and died four days later pp. xxxxxviii-xxxxxx. The rest of the book contains documents relating to the siege and fall of Paysandú. Not located in Palau. Not in Arturo Scarone Diccionario de seudonimos del Uruguay. Not in Museo Mitre: Catálogo de la Biblioteca. Imprenta de el Republicano hardcover

O António Maria. Vol. 1 No. 1 June 12 1879 to Vol. 7 No. 3 January 21 1885
<p><strong>Portugal's First Great Political Satirical Magazine a Complete Set</strong></p><p><strong>Includes Portuguese Poetry </strong></p><p>6vols; small folio; 315 issues COMPLETE. Contemporary half leather bindings red brown and green.2 color title pages and two chromolithographic cartoons; three full-page chromolithographic caricatures; black and white lithographs throughout.</p><p>O António Maria was Portugal's first great political satire magazine directed by Portugal's first great political cartoonist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro 1846-1905.</p><p>The title meant as an exclamation expropriated the first half of the name of the reigning Portuguese Prime Minister António Maria Fontes Pereira.</p><p>Like Puck O António Maria usually devoted its first last and center pages to cartoons. The text pages also were dotted with cartoon art. Among the contributors were the poet Guilherme de Azevedo "João Rialto" Ramalho Ortigão "João Ribaixo" Alfredo Morais Pinto "Pan-Tarantula" João Broa EmÃlio Pimentel Enrique Casanova António Ramalho Ribeiro Cristino Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro Manuel Gustavo and others. Initially the magazine struck a balance between cartoons and text but as it matured the text took a subservient position to cartoons and comic strips.</p><p>Pinheiro used satire and irony in the pages of his magazine to oppose those in power and denounce the selfishness and corruption of the elites. All of Portugal's leading politicians and heads of first families appeared in caricature at one time or another in the weekly In 1884 the government revised the criminal code which seriously limited freedom of the press. It was in this repressive environment against which journalists generally adopted a passive attitude that led Pinheiro in his final issue to explain: "<em>When in a meeting of journalists' I proposed an 18-day publishing moratorium to protest the shameful situation in which the Portuguese government has placed the Portuguese press it was pointed out that O António Maria as a weekly sheet would not be seriously affected by the resolution. So I take the execution of my proposal one step further: O António Maria closes its doors forever in a sign of mourning</em>."</p><p>#WorldCat: 2 copies in US Libraries.</p>

[Raphael] Williams, Mary E[lizabeth]
The Hours of Raphael in Outline - Together with the Ceiling of the Hall Where They Were Originally Painted.
1891. Boston Little Brown and Company 1891. Large Folio 36.5 cm x 44 cm. 19 pages of text plus 16 plates. Illustrated Hardcover green cloth with gilt lettering and ornament. The binding only slightly rubbed. Otherwise in excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Mary Elizabeth Williams artist and author was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 12 1825 the second daughter and youngest of three children born to Willard and Betsey Osgood Williams. She was the sister of Dr. Henry W. Williams 1821-1895 the celebrated eye doctor and Abigail Osgood Williams 1823-1913 with whom she lived and traveled for much of her life. Her father died circa 1833 and her mother two years later; she and her sister apparently then went to live with Mary Osgood a relative on her maternal side at the Osgood farm in South Salem. Mary Elizabeth studied and taught art in Salem for many years. In 1860 she and her sister Abigail traveled to Rome Italy where they resided for 18 years making an occasional return to their Salem home studying and collecting art. Although primarily based in Rome during this period Mary Elizabeth and Abigail traveled throughout Europe visiting at some point England Paris Venice and Florence. The two sisters took lessons in the Italian school of painting while in Rome and made contact with many people of importance in the art world during this period. Upon their return Mary Elizabeth and Abigail resided on Lafayette Street in Salem where they ran a gallery of art in their house. In approximately 1894 they took a trip through the Mediterranean going up the Nile River in their own private boat visiting Athens the Dardanelles and stopping at Constantinople. Mary Elizabeth never married. She died in Salem on September 15 1902. Phillips Library Abigail Osgood Williams artist was born in Boston Massachusetts in October 1823 to Willard and Betsey Osgood Williams and was the older sister and companion to Mary Elizabeth Williams. During the 1850s Abigail Williams helped run the house of her divorced brother Dr. Henry W. Williams and his son Charles H. Williams. In 1860 she traveled to Rome Italy with her sister where they resided for 18 years. Upon their return Abigail lived with her sister in Salem until her death on April 26 1913. Phillips Library Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino March 28 or April 6 1483 – April 6 1520 known as Raphael was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form ease of composition and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. Raphael was enormously productive running an unusually large workshop and despite his death at 37 leaving a large body of work. Many of his works are found in the Vatican Palace where the frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central and the largest work of his career. The best known work is The School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura. After his early years in Rome much of his work was executed by his workshop from his drawings with considerable loss of quality. He was extremely influential in his lifetime though outside Rome his work was mostly known from his collaborative printmaking. After his death the influence of his great rival Michelangelo was more widespread until the 18th and 19th centuries when Raphael's more serene and harmonious qualities were again regarded as the highest models. His career falls naturally into three phases and three styles first described by Giorgio Vasari: his early years in Umbria then a period of about four years 1504–1508 absorbing the artistic traditions of Florence followed by his last hectic and triumphant twelve years in Rome working for two Popes and their close associates. [Raphael]; Vincenzo Vittoria.
Osservazioni sopra il libro della Felsina pittrice per difesa di Raffaello da Urbino dei Caracci e della loro scuola.
Rome: Gaetano Zenobi 1703. First edition. Octavo 23 cm; 114 2 pages. Vignette with arms of Pope Clement XI flanked by putti on title page. LACKS FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT. Decorated letters and ornaments in text. Bound in mottled calf weak at joints and worn at extremities. Early inscription abraded at base of title page. Pages lightly toned with occasional stains. References: Cicognara 2404; Anthony Blunt "Don Vincenzo Vittoria" in The Burlington Magazine 109:766 1967 31-32. <br /><br />The author was a Spanish engraver and printer who lived and worked in Rome for part of his life. The text is a defense of Raphael and others from some dismissive remarks made by Carlo Cesare Malvasia in his promotion of the Carracci and of the Bolognese school "La Felsina Pittrice" 1678. Vittoria wrote the material probably in Spanish while still living in Valencia. In the preface he apologizes for his Italian which "lacks purity." The significance of the book according to the art historian Anthony Blunt lies in the author's descriptions of several drawings by Raphael and his contemporaries which are either lost or known only in engraved copies. Condition noted. Gaetano Zenobi unknown
