Mostly near fine a few very good. 1830 pp. Rafael Antonio Caldera RodrÃguez 1916-2009 was both the 56th and 63th President of Venezuela from 1969 to 1974 and again from 1994 to 1999. His election to the presidency in 1969 was followed by the first peaceful transfer of power from one party to another in Venezuela's history. Highly educated a professor of sociology at UCV and author of numeous books and papers Caldera was a cofounder of the social Christian party COPEI with which he later broke but was elected again without its affiliation shortly after the 1992 coup attempts led by Hugo Chávez whom he pardoned and who succeeded him as President in 2000. All items are first editions in wrappers varying from 16mo to quarto and by Caldera unless noted. A few in English or dual language. Several of his books were very popular and soon made into plays and film. This is the "Definitive edition" which OCLC records only one library which has the first 14 volumes. The present set incorporated more volumes after 1924. Later there was another edition which was limited and signed. Half-titles engraved frontispieces illustrated with tissue guards present. Unpaginated six of the Tuck plates plus perhaps double that number of pages of pithy observations by literary celebs on comradely excellence. Hardbound in a small decorative format popular in the late 19thC: 6x4 inch boards with wide backstrip of ornate filligree gilt on white cloth each cover finished off with narrow papered fore-edges; rather worn with an obvious repair at the head most of the plates are loose with one slightly damaged. The versos of three plates are pencil-scribbled by a child recto images unaffected. FYI very difficult to bind cardstock leaves successfully not surprising these worked free. Plates are on alkaline coated stock text on slightly acidic matte card. We cannot guarantee that all plates are present but the binding shows no telltale gaps. As is. The illustrations themselves are cliche'd flowerbeds and rural vistas the usual super-pleasant imagery destined for throwaway presentations. The author's phoney-sounding moniker is actual and googles. So should "Tuck" whose firm was one of the finest color-litho presses in England rivalling their obsessively detailed German counterparts.
