‎Etienne Moreau-N laton (1859-1927), peintre, c ramiste et graveur, fut galement historien d'art. Il fut notamment l'auteur des plus importantes monographies de son temps, consacr es Delacroix, Corot, Manet ou Millet. Il avait surtout r uni, suivant en cela l'exemple de son grand-p re et de son p re, une collection exceptionnelle de tableaux romantiques et de l' cole de Barbizon, laquelle il ajouta quelques-uns des chefs-d'oeuvre de l'impressionnisme. En 1906, il donna au mus e du Louvre une centaine de toiles majeures et fit entrer dans le patrimoine public national des oeuvres telles que Le D jeuner sur l'herbe de Manet, L'Eglise de Marissel de Corot ou Les Coquelicots de Monet, pour ne citer que trois d'entre elles. En 1927, il l gua au mus e du Louvre et la Biblioth que nationale la totalit de sa documentation d'historien et une collection inestimable de plusieurs milliers de dessins, autographes et gravures des plus grands ma tres du XIXe si cle. Le mus e du Louvre, le mus e d'Orsay et la Biblioth que nationale ont voqu pour la premi re fois dans leur ensemble ces prestigieuses donations, si r v latrices du go t de ce collectionneur exceptionnel. Cent-cinquante peintures, deux cents dessins et cent gravures, auxquels s'ajoutent quelques sculptures et des photographies, ont ainsi t expos s.‎

Meist ging man davon aus, dass Corots Figurenbilder nur einem engen Freundeskreis bekannt gewesen seien. Es gibt jedoch genügend Beweise für die ausgeprägte Leidenschaft dieses bedeutenden Künstlers für die menschliche Figur. Corot malte vorwiegend Frauen, kleidete sie in exotische Kostüme und versah sie mit Attributen wie Büchern oder Musik-instrumenten, um so zu einer überhöhten Gestalt zu gelangen, deren Innerlichkeit aus der Stimmung des gesamten Bildes spricht. Im Zentrum des Bandes steht das »Lesende Mädchen«, ein eindrucksvolles Bild aus der Sammlung Oskar Reinhart. Es wird in einen Kontext von Gemälden und Zeichnungen des Künstlers aus nationalen und internationalen Sammlungen und Museen gestellt, welche die Verankerung des Lektürethemas zeigen und einen repräsentativen Überblick über Corots Figurenbilder geben.
