But acclaim for his painting was slow in coming primarily because of the tribulations of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune which put a hiatus on so much artistic activity during the 1860s-70s. As a result the first two decades of Renoir's career are sometimes ignored an oversight this superb volume decisively remedies. The artist's most important model during these years was his mistress Lise Trehot with whom he was involved from 1865 to 1872. His depictions of Trehot in classic paintings such as 'Woman in a Garden' and 'En ete' both 1868 underscore the importance of Manet for the Impressionists in general but also show Renoir infusing the older artist's somber palette with the warm burnished glow for which he is beloved today and exploring the looser handling of the brush so closely associated with the Impressionist movement. This volume also looks at Renoir's 'plein air' landscape paintings and other portraits such as those of his fellow Impressionists Frederic Bazille and Claude Monet altogether reproducing 250 works in full color. Revelatory and comprehensive 'Between Bohemia and Bourgeoisie' is the first extensive examination of the painter's early oeuvre and the importance of his close friendships with Bazille Manet Monet and Sisley. <meta charset="utf-8"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Mouvement provocateur et dynamique, le Surréalisme déclenche au 20ème siècle un renouvellement esthétique et éthique. Les hommes ne sont pas les seuls à avoir rendu vivants ce courant et ses transgressions : de nombreuses femmes en furent des actrices majeures mais néanmoins mésestimées par les musées et minorées par le marché de l'art. Le Surréalisme offrit à celles-ci un cadre d'expression et de créativité qui n'eut sans doute pas d'équivalent dans les autres mouvements d'avant-garde.</span><br data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Pourtant, c'est souvent en s'appropriant et en étendant des thèmes initiés par les "leaders" du mouvement qu'elles exprimèrent leur liberté. C'est aussi en se dégageant de ce qui devint parfois une doxa surréaliste qu'elles s'affirmèrent. "Tout contre" le Surréalisme, c'est ainsi que l'on pourrait définir leurs positions diversifiées et complexes à l'égard du mouvement. Des années trente aux années soixante-dix, le "surréalisme féminin" forme des constellations éphémères, au gré de ralliements au mouvement souvent temporaires mais aussi d'amitiés qui se nouent hors de ce cadre.</span><br data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">L'imaginaire de ces artistes n'est pas aligné sur celui des figures masculines du mouvement. Leurs pratiques, fréquemment interdisciplinaires - picturales, photographiques, sculpturales, cinématographiques, littéraires... - expriment leur volonté d'échappées belles au-delà des normes hétérosexuelles et des frontières géographiques. Il volume, a corredo dell'importante rassegna torinese, illustra il percorso artistico di Pierre-Auguste Renoir attraverso circa sessanta capolavori eccezionalmente concessi in prestito dai musei d'Orsay e dell'Orangerie, le due istituzioni parigine che ne custodiscono l'opera. Renoir è stato uno dei protagonisti dell'Impressionismo, la corrente attorno alla quale nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento si raccolse un gruppo di pittori francesi in polemica con l'ufficialità del Salon, che rifiutava le loro opere. Ammiratore di Gustave Courbet e di Édouard Manet, ebbe così per compagni di strada Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne e Berthe Morisot. L'esposizione di celebri tele di alcuni di questi artisti, accanto a quelle di Renoir, consente di cogliere appieno il fervido clima di creatività e desiderio di innovazione in cui operavano gli Impressionisti, fatto di ritratti reciproci, condivisione dei medesimi atelier e comuni sedute di pittura, in studio o en plein air. I dipinti presentati in questo catalogo, insieme a tre pastelli e a un bronzo, documentano tutti i momenti e le svolte della prolifica carriera artistica di Renoir, permettendo di ricostruire la sua passione per la pittura che fu feconda, variegata e talvolta complessa.
