Auguste Renoir. 1 page Autograph Letter Signed. Renoir writes to his friend the banker Charles Ephrussi a Russian-French critic art historian art collector and an early supporter of Impressionism. The letter is undated but most likely from the period when Renoir was actively selling to Ephrussi around the early or mid 1880s. He has been identified as the man in a top hat standing with his back to us in Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party 1881. Versailles where Renoir writes this letter would later also become the subject of his paintings.<br/><br/>Renoir writes in his hand:<br/>"My dear friend Impossible for me to have lunch. I'm at Versailles but as I know that you do not go until tonight I would like to shake your hand before your departure. I will come between 5 and 6:30. Friendship and an have excellent trip. A. Full green Morocco leather binding by Giulio Giannini of Firenze Florence with an inlaid red leather spine label; protected in custom-fitted archival mylar. There is minor shelfwear including a number of tiny scuffs. Number 3 of a limited edition of 45 copies signed by Lionello Venturi with an original etching by Renoir tipped-in. The etching which is unsigned is titled "Baigneuse debout a mi-jambes" and was printed in 1910 or shortly thereafter. It is in excellent condition as one might expect being protected inside a book. There is only the first state of this etching Delteil 23. There are at least three distinct impression categories depending upon when and the order in which they were printed. This impression is an early one but not among the earliest with a very good plate tone and maintaining very good detail in the dark areas. Later impressions lose detail and allow much more ink on the paper. The limitation page reads "Tiratura limitata a 45 esemplari numerati oltre a cinque fuori commercio. Copia No 3. L'incisione allegata a ogni copia e originale di Auguste Renoir." Previous owner's gift inscription on the front endpaper that of Boston teacher and poet Antonio Alfredo Giarroputo. The text is clean and unmarked. First edition. Del Turco Editore Hardcover books

3 pages 7 1/2†x 9 3/4†1950’s. Original Typed Letter Signed by French film director Jean Renoir to Belgian screenwriter Charles Spaak regarding the restoration and re-release of Renoir’s classic film Grand Illusion the the screenplay for which was written by Spaak. For many years the original nitrate film negative of the film was thought to have been lost in an Allied air raid in 1942 that destroyed a leading laboratory outside Paris. Prints of the film were rediscovered in 1958 and restored and re-released during the early 1960s. Text in French. Fine condition with a few minor creases from folding. In translation the letter begins: “Dear Charles I hope your scenario is moving ahead that Claudie is enjoying the beautiful weather in Ischia and that you are both very happy.†Renoir goes on to offer suggestions and information for both the narrative and various administrative / distribution issues with mentions of editor Renee Lichtig and producer Ginette Doynel. The letter concludes: “Forgive this long letter. I must include in it both what’s mandatory and what’s useless. You will no doubt do the same when you are in Paris writing to me in America. We are training to become ‘businessmen.’ Dido his wife and I send kisses to the both of you.†Signed “Jean†with JEAN RENOIR typed beneath. The son of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir Jean Renoir 1894 - 1979 made more than forty films from the silent era to the end of the 1960s. La Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game 1939 are often cited by critics as among the greatest films ever made. In 1975 he received a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award for this contribution to the motion picture industry. Grand Illusion was released in the U.S. on September 12 1938 starring Jean Gabin Dita Parlo Pierre Fresnay Erich von Stroheim and Julien Carette. The film tells the story of two French soldiers during WWI who are captured and imprisoned in a German P.O.W. camp from which they are determined to escape. Grand Illusion received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture - the first foreign language film to be honored in this way. Charles Spaak is also known for the films Le Grand Jeu 1934 Le Mystere Barton 1949 - the only film he directed and Avant le Deluge 1954. He also worked with Jean Renoir on another of his major films Le Bas Fonds 1936. Renoir Image of a nude woman kneeling signed
Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Impressionist painter. Rare photographic reproduction 6.25" x 10.5" of one of Renoir's paintings of a nude woman kneeling The image has an original signature on the lower border in black ink "Renoir." The photograph was originally part of the archive of Renoir's art dealer the great Ambrose Vollard. In order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by artists Vollard represented he had all the original paintings photographed then asked the artist to sign each photo and had the signature witnessed. This one is signed by Renoir above a stamp which reads "Seen in order to authenticate the signature of Pierre Auguste Renoir painter witnessed January 10 1911." Renoir's signature is witnessed by the mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer. To the left is his official stamp which reads "Cagnes Alpes Maritimes" and the word in the center reads "Mairie" inside of a laurel. Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 12.75" x 17". In fine condition. While we have seen several of these photographs signed very few are of a human subject making this portrait more desirable. unknown books

1906. Etching. Printed on laid paper. Later impression from the original plate. In pristine condition. Image size: 5 1/8 x 7 ½ inches. Son of a tailor and dressmaker Renoir moved with his family from Limoges to Paris in 1844. He was apprenticed to a porcelain manufacturer from 1854 to 1858 where he painted rococo-style decorations. In 1862-63 he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Charles Gleyre where he met Sisley Pissarro Monet and Fantin-Latour. Renoir first exhibited at the Salon in 1864 and began at about this time to work out-of-doors. Courbet Corot and Daubigny were important early influences although his progress toward a more vivid and sketchy style was encouraged by the work of Monet and Manet. He participated in the first impressionist exhibition of 1874 but subsequently in only the second third and seventh group shows. In 1881-82 Renoir traveled to Algeria and Italy where his exposure to ancient and Renaissance art led him to introduce into his impressionism a new linear and sculptural direction. After years of financial struggle a retrospective at Durand-Ruel in 1892 signaled greater popular success. Although his health began to fail in the late nineties Renoir continued to paint and even experiment with sculpture until his death.<br/> <br/>Delteil Loys. Le peintre-graveur illustré vol. With full margins The papier verdatre is characteristic of Renoir's earliest printings. In excellent condition. The subjects in the painting were originally thought to be Suzanne Valadon and Louis Valtat. But recent identification of Renoir's wife to be Aline Charigo has been made.<br /> Conservation Framed Printed at the studio of Louis Fort books
