Sa femme est Prospérie de Fleury, décédée en 1887, déjà malade en 1885.4 pages à l'encre noire sur un feuillet remplié. Une pliure centrale inhérente à la mise sous pli du courrier. Belle lettre inédite témoignant de l'autre grande passion de Degas après la danse: le chant. "Dieppe, chez M. Halévy, rue de la Grève, 1 Septembre 85 Si je n'ai pas de nouvelles de votre femme, ni de vous, mon cher ami, je n'ai aucune peine à vous avouer que c'est par ma faute et que je l'ai bien mérité! Ecrivez-moi, dites-moi où et comment vous êtes tous les deux, continuez à me croire tous les deux meilleur que je ne le parais. J'aime toujours Sigurd et je l'aime de plus en plus, je n'ai vu Reyer qu'une fois et dans la rue. Et je n'ai pas oublié de lui parler de l'admiration qu'il avait provoquée beaucoup plus immédiatement sur moi que sur une personne qui, pour être ni bonne ni blanchisseuse, ni du commun, méritait quelque considération. On vous fera voir cet ogre charmant cet hiver. Mais sans piano. La partition qu'on me joue ici est paraît-il des plus mal arrangées. C'est un certain Vidal qui est l'arrangeur, et Reyer s'en lave d'autant plus les mains, qu'il ne sait pas jouer du piano, qu'il compose dans les bois et non au clavecin et qu'il ne sait pas la musique. Oeuvre admirable, qui me fait tant de bien, que je ne peux plus m'en passer. Le jeune [Jacques-Emile] Blanche, notre voisin, me la joue tous les jours, à défaut de votre femme. Avez-vous jamais vu le Mont Saint-Michel ? Pourrions-nous un jour y aller passer quelques jours ensemble ? Que c'est beau, que c'est attachant. En un mois j'y suis allé deux fois. Les grandes marées de la fin de septembre vont m'y ramener une troisième. Ecrivez-moi le plus tot que vous pourrez, je serai encore ici toute la semaine. Je vous sers à tous deux bien affectueusement la main." * La première parisienne de l'opéra wagnérien Sigurd d'Ernest Reyer eut lieu le 12 juin 1885 à l'Opéra de Paris. Degas, subjugué par la prestation de la chanteuse Rose Caron vit la pièce à trente-sept reprises: «J'aime toujours Sigurd et je l'aime aussi de plus en plus. Je n'ai vu Reyer qu'une fois et dans la rue. Et je n'ai pas oublié de lui parler de l'admiration qu'il avait provoquée beaucoup plus immédiatement sur moi que sur une personne qui, pour être ni bonne, ni blanchisseuse, méritait quelque considération.» Degas rendit hommage à la beauté de Rose Caron dans Sigurd en réalisant deux dessins sur éventails, aujourd'hui en mains privées aux États-Unis. Véritablement obsédé par cette «uvre admirable qui [lui] fait tant de bien, qu['il] ne [peut] plus [s']en passer», le peintre réclame à son célèbre voisin de lui en interpréter la partition au piano: «Le jeune [Jacques-Emile] Blanche notre voisin me la joue tous les jours, à défaut de votre femme.» La lettre s'achève sur une description lyrique du Mont Saint Michel, dont Degas fit plusieurs dessins: «Avez-vous jamais vu le Mont Saint Michel? Pourrions-nous un jour y aller passer quelques jours ensemble ? Que c'est beau, que c'est attachant. En un mois j'y suis allé deux fois. [années 1870] \| 10.80 x 17.10 cm \| trois pages sur un feuillet double‎ ‎Lettre autographe datée et signée d'Edgar Degas adressée au marchand Charles Deschamps, directeur de la succursale du galeriste Durand-Ruel à Londres. Trois pages à l'encre sur un feuillet double. Petites déchirures marginales sans atteinte au texte, traces de pli inhérentes à la mise sous pli. Rentré de la Nouvelle Orléans, Degas s'adresse à son marchand attitré à Londres et l'informe de l'arrivée prochaine d'une exquise composition de danseuses, Le Foyer de la danse à l'Opéra de la rue Le Peletier, désormais conservé au Musée d'Orsay : «En attendantvous allez recevoir le petit tableau que vous aviez vu en train et que vous aviez pris l'idée de vendre à M. Huth - Puissiez-vous le faire! [...] Quant au prix, il me semble que 150 à 200 livres est bien»Deschamps exaucera les souhaits du peintre et vendra le tableau à Louis Huth, financier et mécène de Whistler, pour la somme de 140 livres. La toile fera ensuite partie de la prestigieuse collection d'Isaac de Camondo. Degas se tourne vers Londres à une période où le marché de l'art anglais permet de pallier la débâcle qui a suivi la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870. Le peintre attend beaucoup de ce nouveau marché britannique en pleine expansion, financé par de lucratives expositions-événement attirant des millions de visiteurs; le public anglais découvrit ainsi les toiles de Degas au cours de huit expositions de la Société des Artistes Français. Bien qu'il mentionne souvent dans sa correspondance des difficultés d'argent «J'ai vers la fin du mois pas mal à payer. Il me rentrerait quelque argent, que j'en serais enchanté[...] - Occupez-vous de moi, mon cher Deschamps, je vous en serai bien obligé - Dites-moi aussi si la saison n'est pas bien avancée. Je le crains » sa carrière outre-manche était assez florissante et ses ventes profitables. Le peintre ne manque pas de saluer la «colonie française» des peintres exilés, Giuseppe de Nittis et son ami intime James Tissot dont le succès financier constituait pour Degas un exemple de commercialisation efficace des peintures d'un artiste français dans ce pays. Mais à la différence de Tissot, le peintre refusera de s'adapter aux goûts du marché et concentrera ses efforts à défendre la cause impressionniste en France et à l'étranger. Degas consacre également un passage à un avide collectionneur de ses uvres, le baryton Jean-Baptiste Faure, commanditaire de sa célèbre série de toiles sur l'Opéra de Paris et propriétaire du Déjeuner sur l'herbe de Manet : «Je devais être à Londres depuis quelque temps, d'après mon dire. Je n'y suis pas parce que le tableau de[Jean-Baptiste]Faure n'est pas fini, que je ne voudrais aller le rencontrer là-bas sans lui donner de meilleures nouvelles, et que je n'ai plus guères le temps de flâner si je veux n'avoir pas encore au 1erseptembre rien à lui livrer». Ironiquement, Faure reprochera aux toiles de Degas de ne pas être correctement finies (!) et lui intentera un procès quelques années plus tard. Une rare et exceptionnelle missive qui retrace le cheminement d'une célèbre uvre de Degas et sa relation avec les marchands et collectionneurs, à l'aube de la première exposition des peintres impressionnistes qui se tiendra un an plus tard. * « Mon cher Deschamps, Je devais être à Londres depuis quelque temps, d'après mon dire. Boussod Valadon & Cie Paris s. d. 1889 41 x 59 cm en feuilles sous portefeuille de l'éditeur First and only edition published of this remarkable set of 15 original lithographs from the post-impressionist painter George William Thornley only 100 copies printed. Publisher's portfolio bound in boards very skilfully restored. 14 of the 15 lithographs are printed in colour black blue green mauve and different browns on broadside China paper laid on pale blue thick paper one is directly printed on thick paper. All except the last bear the stamp of Thornley's signature with the words Chez Mrs Boussod & Valadon 19 Bd Montmartre and Imp. Becquet frères à Paris. In 1888 George William Thornley was commissioned to produce a series of lithographs based on the works of Degas. These lithographs go well beyond the reproduction quality of the renowned publisher. They also demonstrate the high level of collaboration between Degas and Thornley. Thornley first selected the works to publish made the necessary changes in the preparatory drawings and even interrupted the printing at times so that improvements could be made. The importance of Thornley's engravings in Degas' work is particularly highlighted by the book dedicated to Degas by JS Boggs and published by the Metropolitan Museum of New York; a publication in which we find several of the engravings presented in the collection. An opera painting travels to London; Degas greets his close friend James Tissot Paris s. d. années 1870 10.80 x 17.10 cm trois pages sur un feuillet double Autograph letter dated and signed by Edgar Degas addressed to the dealer Charles Deschamps director of Durand-Ruels London branch. Three pages in ink on a bifolium. Minor marginal tears not affecting the text folds from mailing. Recently returned from New Orleans Degas writes to his London dealer to announce the imminent arrival of a delicate composition of dancers Le Foyer de la danse à lOpéra de la rue Le Peletier now held at the Musée dOrsay: ""In the meantime you will receive the little picture you saw in progress and which you had the idea of selling to Mr. Huth - May you succeed! . As for the price it seems to me that £150 to £200 is fair"" Deschamps fulfilled the painters wishes and sold the painting to Louis Huth financier and patron of Whistler for £140. The canvas would later enter the distinguished collection of Isaac de Camondo. Degas turned towards London at a time when the English art market offered relief from the collapse that followed the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. He placed great hopes in this expanding British market fuelled by lucrative blockbuster exhibitions drawing millions of visitors; Degass canvases were shown in eight exhibitions of the Société des Artistes Français. Although he often mentions financial difficulties in his correspondence ""At the end of the month I have quite a lot to pay. If some money came in I would be delighted . - Take care of me my dear Deschamps I would be most obliged - Tell me also if the season is not too far advanced. I fear it is"" his career across the Channel was flourishing and his sales profitable. The painter does not fail to salute the ""French colony"" of expatriate artists Giuseppe de Nittis and his close friend James Tissot whose financial success provided Degas with an example of how effectively a French painters work could be marketed in England. Unlike Tissot however Degas refused to adapt to market taste focusing instead on defending the Impressionist cause in France and abroad. He also devotes a passage to a voracious collector of his works the baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure patron of his celebrated series of canvases on the Paris Opéra and owner of Manets Déjeuner sur lherbe: ""I ought to have been in London some time ago according to what I said. I am not there because the picture for Jean-Baptiste Faure is not finished and I would not like to meet him there without being able to give him better news and I hardly have time to dawdle if I want not to arrive on the 1st of September with nothing to deliver to him"". Ironically Faure would later reproach Degas for leaving his canvases unfinished ! and even sue him a few years afterwards. A rare and exceptional letter tracing the history of one of Degass celebrated works and his dealings with dealers and collectors on the eve of the first Impressionist exhibition to be held the following year. ""My dear Deschamps I ought to have been in London some time ago according to what I said. I am not there because the picture for Jean-Baptiste Faure is not finished and I would not like to meet him there without being able to give him better news and I hardly have time to dawdle if I want not to arrive on the 1st of September with nothing to deliver to him - He is leaving London on the 18th or 19th I know that - Perhaps at the end of the month a little earlier however I will come to see you as well as the French colony. But nothing is less certain. In the meantime you will receive the little picture you saw in progress and which you had the idea of selling to Mr. Huth - May you succeed! At the end of the month I have quite a lot to pay.
