‎Zeitlebens schuf Edgar Degas (1834?1917) neben seinen bekannten Pastellen und Gemälden auch zahl­reiche Plastiken, die er jedoch der breiten Öffentlichkeit vorenthielt. Der Katalog »Intimität und Pose« zeigt den kompletten Bestand der 73 Bronzegüsse, der durch eine reiche Auswahl an Zeichnungen, Pastellen und Gemälden ergänzt wird. Abseits der Öffentlichkeit hat Degas in seinem Atelier eine Vielzahl an Tänzerinnen, Badenden und Rennpferden aus Wachs modelliert, die erst kurz nach seinem Tod gesichert werden konnten und 1919 in Bronze gegossen wurden. In diesen Plastiken zeigt sich Degas? einzigartige Perspektive auf den weiblichen Körper. Denn anders als viele seiner Zeitgenossen richtete der Bildhauer Degas seinen Blick nicht primär auf die inszenierte Pose, sondern auf die Körperhaltungen und Bewegungen im unbeobachteten Moment. Das Resultat seiner Arbeit sind »intime Posen«: Tänzerinnen, die Ballettpositionen proben, ihre Schuhe schnüren oder ihre Füße betrachten, und Frauen beim Kämmen oder Waschen. Degas zeigt vor allem die Frauen hinter der Bühne und bei der Toilette und befasst sich mit der Arbeit, die sie vor dem Auftritt in der Öffentlichkeit in ihren Körper investieren müssen. Die Pflege und Disziplinierung der Körper, aber auch entspannte Momente werden so sichtbar. Diese für seine Zeit außergewöhnliche, zuweilen Betrachter und Kritiker schockierende Sicht auf den ungeschönten Körper und seine Herrichtung wird in den Bronzeskulpturen sowie in den ausgewählten Zeichnungen, Pastellen und Gemälden behandelt. In diesen Arbeiten experimentiert der Künstler mit Posen, Gesten und Bewegungen, die er in immer neuen Variationen wiederholt und fast wie in filmischen Sequenzen vor dem Betrachter ausbreitet.
