Elle est illustrée avec des superbes encadrements gravés sur bois par Iacobus Faber (chiffre IF à côté des gravures d'Aristote et d'Erate) d'après Hans Holbein le Jeune. Quelques frottements à a reliure, usures à trois coins et petite fente de 4 cm dans la partie inférieure de la charnière du premier plat. Tout petit manque de vélin dans la charnière du second plat. Le premier f. de garde partiellement détaché. Mouillure claire dans l'angle supérieur des vingt premiers ff., plus foncée dans les 4 premiers ff. Mouillure claire dans l'angle inférieur des cent derniers ff. Une petite déchirure, sans perte, sur la p. du titre et tout petit manque dans la marge externe de l'encadrement gravé. Une petite galerie de ver dans la marge supérieure des cahiers d-f. Un autre galerie de ver qui touche quelques lettres au centre des pages sur moitié du volume. Une tache dans la marge des ff. r4 et r5. Quelques pages avec des rousseurs. Bel exemplaire en général. Strabon, issu d'une famille illustre d'Amasée, "s'installa à Rome probablement juste avant la mort de César, ce qui fait de lui une source supplémentaire pour l'étude de l'histoire romaine sous Auguste. A ses nombreux séjours à Rome s'ajoutent d'autres voyages, notamment dans le reste de l'Italie, en Gaule mais aussi en Afrique (Ethiopie et Egypte en particulier)... Ses nombreux voyages lui permires d'accumuler une documentation suffisante pour écrire la Géographie, un ouvrage en 17 livres organisés par régions. Fondé sur une démarche scientifique et ethnographique, cet ouvrage apparaît comme une oeuvre notable pour l'époque du fait de son ampleur". Magnificent very elaborated metalcut title-page border with Christ as Intercessor before God the Father the Four Symbols of the Evangelists and the Mission of the Apostles elegant and beautiful metalcut border to first leaf of text beautiful metalcut initials throughout and a few beautiful metalcut vignettes all designed by Holbein and executed by Faber - the first border is signed "IF" by Faber in the plate. F. 1 9 ff. - Index ff. 2-221 1 f. - colophon. � The fourth issue of the beautiful and rare Basel-Cratander-edition of Theophylactos' "Evangelia Ennarationes" "Commentaries on the Four Gospels" in the Latin version by Johannes Oelampadio.<br><br>The work is most excellently printed by Cratander in Basel and the many metal-cut initials as well as the two metalcut borders most beautiful and outstanding is the first depicting Christ as Intercessor before God the Father the Four Symbols of the Evangelists and the Mission of the Apostles are executed after drawings by Hans Holbein the younger by the famous engraver and block-cutter Jacob Faber or Master IF as he is known due to the monogram with which he signed his prints. Faber or Jecques Lef�vre not to be confused with the Renaissance humanist d'�taples which was probably his original French name was a highly important block-cutter of both woodcuts and metalcuts as well as engraver designer of decorative prints such as initials and borders and publisher. He was active in Basel and later in France in the period 1516-1550. He is most famous for the beautiful metal-cut title-page borders and book illustrations that he made to the designs of Hans Holbein the Younger whom he worked closely with in Basel in the 1520'ies.<br><br>It is very likely that Faber is the executer of the very fist metalcut produced in Basel as he was working for Froben at the time of its production in 1518; in any case Faber became Froben's main cutter in metal very early on. During the 1520'ies Faber began working together with Hans Holbein the Younger creating metalcuts made after his designs. In the very beginning the technique was not very elaborated and the earliest of these metal-cuts are a bit crude. However Faber's technique quickly improved presumably because of Holbein's growing interest in this technique and Faber's work which meant that he began working with him instead of merely handing over his designs. The Theophylactos "title-page border with Christ as Intercessor before God the Father the Four Symbols of the Evangelists and the Mission of the Apostles" is made at the height of this magnificent collaboration and stands as a prime example of the metal-cut technique of the 1520'ies as well as the crowning achievement of the two artists as it also represents the last metalcut that Faber executed for Holbeing in Basel the metal-plate was made in 1523. At this time Faber might well also have been influenced in his progress by the arrival in Basel in 1522 of the very skilled woodcutter Hans L�tzelburger who came with high technical and artistic standards.<br><br>With the perfection of the metalcut-technique Faber also influenced many other of the excellent woodcutters and engavers of the period challenging them to refine their technique and spreading the use of the metalcut which he had proven to possess an advantage over the woodcut where the wood would sometimes break in the small fine lines. <br><br>The now renowned work "Title Page Border with Christ as Intercessor before God the Father the Four Symbols of the Evangelists and the Mission of the Apostles" was first used in the Basel-Cratander-edition of Oecolampadio's Latin version of Theophylactos' "In quator Evangelia enarrationes". This work was originally published in 1522 and it was reproduced in 1524 1525 and 1527 bearing witness to its great popularity. <br><br>Theophylactos was a Greek archbishop of Ohrid and commentator on the Bible. He was presumably born at Euripus in Euboea about the middle of the 11th century. He became a deacon at Constantinople attained a high reputation as a scholar and became the tutor of Constantine Ducas son of the Emperor Michael VII. Around 1078 he went to Bulgaria and became archbishop of Achrida or Ohrid. Here he produced several works of very high standard that became of influence throughout Europe especially in the Renaissance when his works were printed in both Latin and Greek. One of his most important works is his commentaries on the four Gospels. His commentaries are largely based on those of Chrysostomos but they are of great importance due to appositeness sobriety accuracy and judiciousness because of which they came to influence much religious writing and thought.<br><br>Graesse VII:128. unknown

<p>This book an original publication not the reproduced one. A major attraction is its hardcover which has beautiful coat of arms designs ornamentation on border and text printed in gold with red color background and the same have been shown engraved on the back hardcover.</p><p>For the promotion of Indian art this book had been written after examining the collections of most of the native princes and especially their libraries pictures and portraits.</p><p>The book is soiled. Hardcover has wears tears on edges and corners and some color fade marks. The pages are slightly detached from the spine but binding not loose.</p><p>The pages have foxing marks. Some initial pages have slight wears on edges whereas next few pages are in fine condition. The pages of black and white illustrations are fine.</p><p>Some colored illustration pages have wears and tears which were pasted with brown tape and some with white tape. A few pages have many cracks tears light stains and some part of the page is missing. One colored page in last has a few stains and very damaged which have been repaired by a back up sheet. The head for edge and tail have rubbed edges and foxing marks.</p><p>Pages are not loose.</p> hardcover
