London: Robert Bassam 1795. . Third edition 16mo. pp.xxviipreface51plates original pictorial paper-covered boards woodcut to each board frontispiece 51 further plates; some folding to lower corners contemporary owner’s neat ink autograph to title and largely faded does not obscure plate to front board lacking backstrip or spine with boards just held by cords light wear to corners small soil marks to fore-edge margin of rear board all contents clean a very good copy. The first edition printed in Newcastle in 1789 attributes the woodcuts to Thomas and John Bewick but this seems erroneous as Thomas later wrote to his brother John “I am much pleased with the Cuts for 'Death's Dance' and wish much to have the book when it is done. I am surprised that you would undertake to do them for 6s. each. You have been spending your time and grinding out your eyes to little purpose indeed. I would not have done them for a farthing less than double that sumâ€. London: Robert Bassam, 1795. hardcover
