L'opposizione tragica è tra la sofferenza che non giustifica nulla e il mito che giustifica tutto. In questa teofania mitica avviene una trasformazione del dio crudele nel dio giusto e del tempo che tutto divora nella storia che raggiunge i propri scopi. Nell'antropologia tragica continuano a cambiare soltanto i nomi dei capri espiatori: il mito della mediazione rimane identico. La strada dall'esilio dal paradiso al nuovo paradiso, che è stato promesso, è cosparsa di cadaveri. Non esiste tragedia senza mito, ma la tragedia ne è anche, contemporaneamente, la distruzione. È un appello alla mediazione, e insieme una dimostrazione dell'impossibilità della mediazione. È questo il momento di lucidità dell'eroe tragico». Jan Kott (1914-2001) ci offre qui una serie di magistrali letture della tragedia greca: la sociologia, l'antropologia, la storia delle religioni e il teatro dell'assurdo sono gli strumenti privilegiati di un'indagine insuperata nella sua originalità.
