Auch er kommt jedoch nicht umhin Grecos Malerei als bedeutend anzuerkennen. In seinem Buch Die Kunst der Malerei 1649 schreibt er: Denn obwohl wir verschiedentlich seinen Ansichten und Paradoxen widersprochen haben so können wir ihn doch nicht aus der Reihe der großen Maler ausschließen nachdem wir gewisse Werke von ihm kennen so lebendig und kräftig daß sie es mit denen der größten Männer aufnehmen können. Knapp 30 Jahre später hat sich die Auffassung bereits gewandelt. Jusepe Martinez spricht in seinem Traktat über die Malerei verständnislos von der Extravaganz El Grecos: Er führte eine so extravagante Manier ein daß bis auf den heutigen Tag nichts so Ausgefallenes gesehen worden ist. Im 19. Jahrhundert schließlich sprach man von einer wilden Manier und von malerischen Entartungserscheinungen . Man glaubte El Greco müsse ein Augenleiden oder eine andere Krankheit gehabt haben die sein Werk beeinflußt habe. Erst zu Beginn unseres Jahrhunderts wurde die Kunst El Grecos wiederentdeckt und geschätzt. Man verstand ihn nun als Propheten und Vorläufer der Moderne besonders des Expressionismus: Sein Name war ein Geheimtip für Eingeweihte.
