Lettre autographe signée de Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres à Charles Paillet avec son adresse et titre autographes "commissaire expert honoraire des Musées Royaux", tampons postaux. Traces de plis inhérents à l'envoi. Une déchirure marginale restaurée, sans atteinte au texte. Exceptionnel manuscrit dans lequel Ingres donne les descriptions et les consignes d'exposition de ses deux tableaux inspirés de la vie de l'Arétin : "L'Arétin et lenvoyé de Charles Quint" et LArétin chez le Tintoret". * Le peintre avait exécuté ces deux tableaux d'histoire en 1815 et présentés au Salon de 1824 à Paris - choisissant des épisodes de la romanesque et scandaleuse vie de l'Arétin : "Par le choix de ce sujet, Ingres affirme lindépendance du créateur face aux puissants. Il témoigne également du grand succès dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle des représentations dépisodes de la vie des peintres ou des écrivains du passé, illustrés sur un mode anecdotique." (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon). Cette lettre fait rérérence à l'apparition des toiles en 1829 dans une « Exposition au profit de la caisse ouverte pour l'extinction de la mendicité » à la galerie Lebrun, fondée par le défunt mari d'Elizabeth Vigée-Lebrun.Les descriptions données par Ingres dans cette lettre seront publiées dans le catalogue de l'exposition (Explication des ouvrages de peinture et sculpture [...], Coniam, 1829, p. 20-21). Ingres les adresse au respecté marchand de tableaux Charles Paillet - tout en précisant sa qualité d'expert du musée du Louvre dans son adresse au verso de la missive. Les oeuvres sont aujourdhui conservées en collection privée (L'Arétin et l'Envoyé de Charles Quint a été récemment vendu par la Stair Sainty Gallery). Ingres revisitera le sujet de ces toiles et en exécuta une autre version en 1848 aujourd'hui au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. Intéressante missive, qui nous apprend qu'Ingres fut l'auteur des descriptions de ses propres oeuvres, lors de leur exposition en 1829. Monsieur j'ai l'honneur de vous envoyer les notices de mes 2 tableaux sur Pierre Arétin. ces 2 tableaux moralement liés par le sujet ne peuvent être exposés qu'ensemble, cependant un seul tableau peut les séparer. J'ai l'honneur de vous prier monsieur de les exposer dans la travée en face de celui du Philippe V. Je vous les apporterai moi-même lorsque j'irai le 24 retirer ceux qui ne doivent plus figurer à l'exposition. J'ai l'honneur de vous saluer avec une parfaite considération Ingres Sujet du premier tableau sur Pierre Arétin surnommé le fléau des princes. Charles 5 à son retour d'Afrique lui envoya pour l'engager à se taire une chaîne d'or de la valeur de 100 ducats: «voilà dit le Satyrique un bien petit don pour une si grande sottise». Sujet du II Tableau L'émulation dégénérée en jalousie avait brouillé le Tintoret et le Titien. LArétin intime ami du dernier prit son parti et se déchaîna contre le Tintoret. Celui cy le rencontrant un jour près de sa maison le pria d'entrer sous prétexte de lui faire son portrait. A peine le fléau des princes fut il assis que le peintre vint à lui, le pistolet à la main. « Eh, Jacques s'écria le poète épouvanté que voulez-vous donc faire ? prendre votre mesure, répondit gravement le Tintoret et après l'avoir mesuré, il ajouta du même ton : « vous avez 2 de mes pistolets et demie de haut » et le renvoya...» - Photographies et détails sur www.Edition-Originale.com -

Le peintre chef de file de l'école néo-classique recommande son élève Albert Magimel (1799-1877) pour une commande publique de deux tableaux, probablement à la ville de Tours : "Cher ami, Il m'est venu une idée pour placer le tableau de M. Magimel, sans déranger l'ordre suivi.Ne pouvez-vous pas, pour figurer cet artiste au budget de la ville pour une commande de deux mille f. par exemple par laquelle somme il s'engage à vous faire deux tableaux au lieu d'un seul, vous faisant de suite ce tableau qui est fait en donnant quittance de la moitié de la somme. Vous aurez alors deux tableaux pour un [...]je vous jette ce projet, peut-être impraticable pour vous à votre bienveillante volonté, sans y attacher que l'intérêt que je porte à un ami".
