Juli 1721 in Nogent-sur-Marne, erst 37- jährig an Schwindsucht starb, fand sein Tod kaum Beachtung. Unter den wenigen Freunden, die seinen Tod betrauerten, war Jean de Jullienne, dessen verlegerischem Meisterwerk, dem " Oeuvre grave de Watteau ", wir verdanken, daß die Zeichnungen und Gemälde Watteaus der Nachwelt als Kupferstiche und Radierungen nahezu komplett erhalten geblieben sind, denn viele der Originale gelten als verschollen. Jean de Jullienne (Paris 1686 - 1766), reicher Tuchfabrikant, Direktor der königlichen Tuchmanufaktur und Kunstsammler, war Mäzen und enger Freund Watteaus. Auf dem Totenbett schenkte Watteau ihm und einigen anderen Freunden einen großen Teil seiner Zeichnungen. Jullienne gab diese Zeichnungen 1726 - 28 unter dem Titel "Figures de differents caracteres, de paysages & d'etudes dessinees d'apres nature" heraus. Gestochen wurden die Blätter von Frangois Boucher, Jean Audran und anderen Künstlern. Die beiden Bände mit 351 Kupferstichen waren eine Hommage an den verstorbenen Freund.Doch schon im Jahre 1717, vor dem Tode Watteaus, hatte Jullienne angefangen, das gemalte Werk in Kupfer stechen zu lassen. Zu dem Zweck versammelte er die besten Stecher der Zeit in der Gobelinfabrik und begann mit der Herausgabe dieses Meisterwerkes der Graphischen Kunst als eine Art " Catalogue raisonne ", Da Jullienne, laut Aussage seines Zeitgenossen P. J. Mariette, eine Weile im Besitz fast aller Ölgemälde Watteaus war, standen den Stechern die Originale als Vorlage zur Verfügung. Unter dem Titel: " L'Oeuvre D'Antoine Watteau... Grave d'apres ses Tableaux & Desseins originaux... " erschienen 1726 - 1739 in Paris zwei Bände mit zusammen ca. 270 Kupferstichen. Diese Ausgabe auf großem Papier war auf eine Auflage von nur 100 Exemplaren beschränkt und für Jullienne finanziell ein schlechtes Geschäft. Sein Meisterwerk gilt als eines der schönsten und seltensten Bücher des 18. Jahrhunderts und ist als "Recueil Jullienne " bekannt. Es ist mir eine besondere Freude, jetzt eine Kollektion von etwa 100 Blatt dieser äußerst seltenen Kupferstiche aus dem"L'Oeuvre D'Antoine Watteau" präsentieren zu können. ? (Vorwort Ange Marcus)‎
