European intellectual and artists have been mesmerized since the earliest times by this presumably mysterious and relatively closed world. As a natural consequence, during various periods many artists, either by travelling themselves or by travelling in their imaginations, sought to discover the essence of the Orient, and depicted or expressed in their works either the real Orient or their own visions of it. The movement known as Orientalism in European art, which appeared in conjunction with the Romanticist movement of the 19th century, focused on the East, primarily in the lands of the Ottoman Empire. Even long before the rise of Orientalism in European art, many European artists, fascinated by their first glimpses of the mysterious East and by the Turquerie fashion which was the result of the new relations with the Ottoman world. For nearly two hundred years, starting from the 18th century, numbers of painters, some of whom became known as the Bosphorus Painters, worked intensively in the lands of the Empire and depicted the Ottoman world ib its various aspects, consequently engraving those images in mankind's visual memory. The exhibition Portraits from the Empire sheds light on a special part of this opulent world. Almost sixty paintings selected from the Suna and Inan Kiraç and Sevgi and Erdogan Gönül collections bring us face to face with the peoples of the Ottoman world, their portraits and portrayals, sometimes very familiar and sometimes remote, even nearly foreign, in their physiognomies. These paintings, most of them created before the eye of the camera replaced the human eye, in the times when observing, studying, interpreting and depicting the world was the priority of painters, present the lost faces of an era long past with amazing reality and vividness.‎

Quelques rousseurs, parfois plus marquées en p. de titre, mouillure pour l'année 1771. Bel ensemble en reliure uniforme, chaque volume portant la signature de H. L. Roux en page de titre.‎

‎Illustré de 29 planches hors-texte dépliantes et de très nombreux tableaux dépliants. De 1763 à 1773, les pages de titre sont entièrement gravées par J. R. Holzhalb. De 1760 à 1766, chaque année est composée de 4 parties en 2 volumes, à partir de 1767 à 1773, chaque année est en 2 parties reliées en 1 volume. Quelques notes manuscrites intéressantes dans la seconde partie de 1762 (p. 137, et suivantes). Pour 1764, on trouve une table générale des matières et une des auteurs. Dès 1763, c'est Fortuné-Barthelémy de Félice, à Yverdon qui fut l'imprimeur. "Les sociétés économiques furent créées en tant que sociétés savantes pendant la révolution agricole dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIesiècle. Se référant tant à la physiocratie qu'à une notion plus large de l'économie, elles avaient pour objectifs la discussion, la diffusion et la concrétisation des connaissances en vue d'accroître la production, notamment dans l'agriculture, mais également dans le commerce, l'artisanat, les mines et l'industrie. Elles établirent des descriptions topographiques et des relevés statistiques des conditions économiques, organisèrent des concours, publièrent des manuels d'instruction pour la population des campagnes, ainsi que des ouvrages consacrés à l'éducation du peuple, créèrent des exploitations modèles et encouragèrent la formation professionnelle. Elles permirent la constitution de réseaux d'experts éclairés et la diffusion de leurs connaissances. Leurs membres provenaient essentiellement des élites politiques et intellectuelles urbaines. La Société économique de Berne, créée par Johann Rudolf Tschiffeli en 1759, fut la première association de ce genre en Europe continentale. Elle avait des sections dans la partie alémanique, mais surtout dans la partie romande de la République et acquit une renommée internationale sous la présidence d'Albert de Haller (1708-1777). "Théorie économique et politique née en France dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIes., la physiocratie entendait réagir contre le mercantilisme et réduire au minimum les interventions de l'Etat. Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours, qui forgea l'expression dans son ouvrage Physiocratie ou constitution naturelle du gouvernement le plus avantageux (1767), François Quesnay et le marquis Victor de Mirabeau furent les principaux représentants de la physiocratie française. Selon eux, seule l'agriculture, et non le commerce, constituait la branche économique susceptible de pouvoir rapporter un produit net; c'est de ce secteur que les propriétaires fonciers devaient tirer au moins la moitié de leurs revenus. La physiocratie encouragea une modernisation fondamentale du secteur de production. Son idéal résidait dans une agriculture mécanisée, basée sur le fermage, avec un fort investissement en capital, inspirée du modèle anglais. La physiocratie trouva rapidement des partisans en Suisse. La Société économique de Berne, fondée en 1759, joua un rôle pionnier en établissant un réseau de correspondants dans toute la Suisse. Grâce à ses concours, elle émit des propositions d'amélioration qui furent publiées dans les Mémoires et observations recueillies par la Société œconomique de Berne. Ces articles portaient sur des domaines variés, comme l'apiculture, les fourrages, l'irrigation ou le drainage; les récompenses étaient aussi attribuées à des paysans. […] Le service mercenaire introduisit une note spécifiquement suisse dans le discours physiocratique. Responsable d'une baisse constante de la population, celui-ci était accusé d'affaiblir la Confédération et de la conduire à son déclin; par conséquent, les paysans devaient être soutenus. Les "patriotes économiques" exercèrent aussi une grande influence au sein de la Société helvétique (1761-1797), qui comptait parmi ses membres d'éminents partisans des idées physiocratiques, tels Isaak Iselin et Niklaus Emanuel Tscharner. La "conversion" d'Iselin à la physiocratie remonte à 1770.
