‎Gainsborough‎

‎-Tate Publishing 15 Oct. 2002-. Exhibition catalogue. First paperback editon. 295x235mm 296 pages. Illustrated in colour and black and white. Paperback. Very good indeed. This work looks at the art of Thomas Gainsborough widely acknowledged as one of the great masters of the 18th century. Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Tate Britain the text aims to demonstrate the sheer range quality and originality of this artist's work. It intends to present a new angle of the artist exploring his studio practice and innovative use of colour as well as highlighting the inventiveness and complexity of his techniques. Gainsborough shunned the theory-led practice of the Royal Academy in preference for an art based on pleasure over convention this volume draws on the view that his work has a continuing significance for British culture today. ‎Gainsborough's Vision.‎

‎-Liverpool University Press 1999-. First edition. 285x200mm xvi325 pages with index. 185 illustrations in color and black and white. Cloth. Very good indeed in dustjacket. Thomas Gainsborough has been celebrated as a lanscapist whose pictures evoke his love of the countryside as a portrait painter of exactness and vivacity and as a rhythmic and spontaneous draughtsman. Such judgements have persistently created a difficulty for art criticism. Gainsborough's work is not satisfactorily accounted for by the classicizing academic criteria which aspired to be the official art theory of his period. It is not sufficient to label him an anti-intellectual natural genius. Paying equal attention to portraits landscapes and fancy pictures this work aims to demonstrate that Gainsborough's work demands an alternative explanatory framework. Analysis of individual pictures supp orted by illustrations and citations suggest a variety of 18th-century contexts for Gainsborough's achievements: the populist and emotive culture of religous non-conformity; a philosophical and scientific outlook epitomized by John Locke and Isaac Watts based on self-scrutiny and careful observation of the external workd; pastoral and emblem literature; 18th-century music theory; and the work of writers including John Bunyan Francis Quarles Jonathan Edwards; William Cowper and Laurence Sterne. Pictorial analyses clarify Gainsborough's relationship with the work of his artistic contemporaries and predecessors notably Hogarth Hayman and Reynolds; Rubens Van Dyck Ruisdael Claude and Watteau. The authors aim to reveal that the style themes and ideas of Gainsborough's images constitute purposeful expressions of an intellectual and visual culture of the 18th century. Gainsborough's Vision. Several fine collections of which that of Mr. S. Joseph was one were mainly formed under his advice. In 1892 he succeeded the late Henry Doyle as Director of the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin which his predecessor had reorganized and developed; and in this post Armstrong remained for over 20 years his services recognized by a knighthood in 1899. ‎THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH. A COUNTRY LIFE.‎

‎, Munich, Prestel, 2002., Bound, blue cardboard, illustrated dust jacket, frontispice in colour, 225 x 265mm., 96pp., 65 colour and 23 b/w illustrations. ISBN 9783791327846.‎

‎This new study on Thomas Gainsborough concentrates on the early life and works of the great eighteenth-century artist. Gainsborough's talent was evident at a young age, and before he established himself as one of London's leading portrait artists he was able to indulge himself in his true passion, landscapes, as well as providing portraits for a provincial clientele. Graced with the light and gentle shadows of the English countryside, these early works provided the foundation for much of Gainsborough's later work. New book.‎
