‎Trés rare édition originale de cet ouvrage majeur sur la langue des signes française dû à Roch-Ambroise Sicard (1742-1822), ecclésiastique français qui se voua à l'éducation des sourds-muets. Disciple de Charles-Michel de L'Épée (1712-1789) auquel il succède en tant que Directeur de l'Institut royal des sourds-muets à Paris dès 1790, Sicard laisse derrière lui une uvre remarquable considérée comme aussi importante pour le développement de la langue des signes que celle de l'abbé de l'Épée. A ce titre, c'est Sicard qui terminera son dictionnaire des signes manuels. Prête de formation, il devient directeur de l'école de sourds-muets de Bordeaux en 1786 et, en 1790, directeur de l'école des sourds-muets de Paris le 1er avril 1790. Pour ne pas avoir prêté le serment à la constitution civile du clergé, il est incarcéré à l'Abbaye le 26 août et libéré le 4 septembre 1792. Reconnu comme prêtre bienfaisant au titre dinstituteur des sourds-muets, il échappe aux massacres de Septembre. Professeur à lÉcole normale en 1795, il est aussi membre de la Société des observateurs de l'homme où il lutte contre l'athéisme et la République des savants. Menacé de déportation au 18 fructidor, il se cache pendant deux ans, jusqu'au 18 brumaire. Il réintègre son poste de directeur de l'Institut des sourds-muets de Paris, en janvier 1800, Louis François Joseph Alhoy ayant mené l'établissement pendant les trois ans de sa proscription. Il devient membre de l'Institut de France en 1795 et de l'Académie française en 1803. ?Ce cours, premier ouvrage de Sicard, est composé de 25 leçons, et précédé dun long discours préliminaire qui traite tout dabord de la nécessité dinstruire les sourds-muets, puis de lorigine de cet enseignement et notamment de l'abbé de LEpée. Pour convaincre du bien fondé de cette instruction, Sicard se réfère à l Essai sur les facultés de lâme de Charles Bonnet et au Traité des sensations de Condillac, comparant le sourd-muet de naissance à une statue dont il faut ouvrir, lun après lautre, et diriger, tous les sens, et suppléer à celui dont il est malheureusement privé. Bien que l'uvre de Sicard soit remarquable, la valeur de ses méthodes pédagogiques ne sera véritablement reconnue que peu après sa mort, survenue en 1822. Louvrage contient de très nombreux schémas dans le texte et est illustré de 8 planches dépliantes dont celle impressionnante représentant lalphabet dactylologique. Bel exemplaire, conservé dans sa condition d'origine de cet ouvrage dimportance pour lhistoire de la langue des signes française. Very rare first edition of this major work on French sign language by Roch-Ambroise Sicard (1742-1822), a French clergyman dedicated to the education of the deaf and dumb. Sicard was a disciple of Charles-Michel de L'Épée (1712-1789), whom he succeeded as Director of the Institut royal des sourds-muets in Paris from 1790, Sicard left behind a remarkable body of work considered as important to the development of sign language as that of Abbé de l'Épée. As such, it was Sicard who completed his dictionary of manual signs. Trained as a priest, he became director of the Bordeaux school for the deaf and dumb in 1786 and, in 1790, director of the Paris school for the deaf and dumb on April 1, 1790. He was imprisoned at the Abbaye on August 26, and released on September 4, 1792, for failing to take the oath to the civil constitution of the clergy. Recognized as a benefactor priest and "teacher of the deaf and mute", he escaped the September massacres. A professor at the École normale in 1795, he was also a member of the Société des Observateurs de l'Homme, where he fought against atheism and the Republic of " scholars ". Threatened with deportation on 18 fructidor, he went into hiding for two years, until 18 brumaire. In January 1800, he returned to his post as director of the Institut des sourds-muets de Paris, Louis François Joseph Alhoy having run the establishment during the three years of his proscription. He became a member of the Institut de France in 1795 and of the Académie française in 1803. This course, Sicard's first work, consists of 25 lessons, and is preceded by a long preliminary discourse that deals first with the need to educate the deaf and dumb, and then with the origins of this teaching, in particular Abbé de L'Epée. To convince us of the merits of such instruction, Sicard refers to Charles Bonnet's "Essai sur les facultés de l'âme" and Condillac's "Traité des sensations", comparing the deaf-mute from birth to a statue "whose senses must all be opened, one after the other, and directed, to supplement the one of which he is unfortunately deprived". Although Sicard's work is remarkable, the value of his pedagogical methods was not truly recognized until shortly after his death in 1822. The work contains numerous diagrams in the text and is illustrated with 8 fold-out plates, including an impressive one showing the dactylological alphabet. A fine copy, preserved in its original condition, of this important work on the history of French sign language. No copies of this first edition have come up for sale in the last 50 years.‎
