Finissima incisione su soggetto di pari bellezza, opera congiunta di una coppia di artisti appartenenti a due illustri, cospicue dinastie di pittori e incisori quali furono i Breugel e i Sadeler. La scena, vivacissima, raffigura un porto naturale nei pressi di una imponente città, visibile sullo sfondo ed estesa verso i monti retrostanti (forse Napoli, dove Breugel soggiornò nel 1590?); diverse barche e velieri sono ormeggiati presso la riva o più al largo. S.l.n.d. [1793] 1 vol. relié in-4, demi-veau brun à coins du début du XIXe siècle, dos lisse orné de fines dentelles et fleurons dorés. Recueil factice et unique de 72 gravures originales sur la vie du Christ. Les 18 premières (format in-8) sont de Moreau le Jeune et illustrent le Nouveau Testament (A Paris, chez Saugrain, 1793). Les 54 suivantes, contrecollées sur vergé d'Arches, sont signées de deux peintres flamands de la fin du XVIe siècle, Johan Sadeler et Maarten de Vos. First print of the series: Love. In the foreground a young man playing a lute under a tree with Cupid aiming an arrow at him; beyond is a park with a loggia and figures making music eating and drinking at a table in the open air; at left is a Diana fountain a female torso spurting water from her breasts atop a turtle; by the musician's feet are various musical instruments a sport racket a sword gloves and a moneybag. Inscribed on the bottom:'Dum mihi. foelix qui potuit dicere talis eram.'; number '253' added with brown ink titled above:'AMOR' Inscription Content: Lettered above with AMOR. In Latin. 12mo. 5 x 3 inches; 12.5 x 7.5 cm. 16 406pp. 4 title page vignettte eight full page engravings by Raphael Sadeler 3/4 leather with marbled boards and raised bands. An epigram likely by Bidermann printed beneath each engraving. Bookplate of Colonel Cooper. All edges gilt. Lacks spine label altho date is printed at heel of spine. Good inner hinges reinforced rear inner hinge paper cracked but binding is holding and tight. Text clean with almost no foxing and no staining; no tears and no chips. Plates are nicely detailed and all VG or better in condition. Pictures available on request. Appears to be 2nd edition. . hardcover

Binding: 18th century full vellum; rebacked expertly saving the original spine; flat spine with gilt lettered and dated title on morocco label; edges marbled; renewed endpapers. Notes: Captions in Latin. The work depicts hermits saints with one of five parts devoted to female believers; this anthology is rarely offered. The members of the Sadeler family were among the most successful Flemish engravers and publishers of their time. Size: Oblong folio 335x263mm.
